For those looking for a new project car, this could be a good or bad thing, depending on where you are. There are a lot of cars in Texas, and they’re in no rush to get out of town. That’s because Texas is the fossil fuel capital of the country, and Texans love their cars.
We recently took a deep dive into all of the top Texas Craigslist locations, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso. We set out to find the 10 best deals on project cars for $5,000 and under between 1960 and 1985. What about Texas?
It turns out that Texas, despite being bigger than California, has fewer cool cars than we’d like to find in rust-free condition. Still, not everyone can just quit work for a week and head to the West Coast for something like this. Sometimes you have to work with what you have (ie Gulf Coast rust); You could do worse than the Lone Star State, where much of the western half is exposed to a protective, dry California-like environment.
However, one thing that seems to be universal across all Craigslist sites is that the low cost of posting results in a lot of crappy listings with bad photos, little information, and cryptic contact information. Even as salespeople grow, there’s a lack of hard facts — like spending all day inspecting a car. This is a lesson for sellers that if you really want to sell the maximum amount, it pays to put better quality/quantity photos and more details in your ad or risk disappointing everyone. the world. Let’s see what Texas has to offer on Sunday, January 21, 2021! (Be sure to check out all the additional photos in the gallery.)
This Manual 1967 Mercury Cougar 289 Is Looking For A New And Caring Owner
Cisco, Texas is where this Givenchy Lincoln Mark IV Edition came from, and you can bet it spent most of its 91,000 miles in air-conditioned comfort above the I-20 freeway. These luxury boats from the early 80’s are at the bottom in terms of value, and if you can find one in good condition at a good price, now is the time to buy. This one needs some work to get going, but we’re encouraged by the right metal. Our biggest concern isn’t really the unsteerable condition (302ci/AOD transmission combos cost a penny), but replacing a shattered turn signal lens would be extremely difficult, regardless of the price of the part. (See the announcement here.)
We love field finds, and the one that describes itself (Smithville, Texas) looks the part with a good soak. What puts it on our radar is the X-body architecture (same as the Chevy Nova). It runs, but forget the 3.8-liter Buick V-6 it was born with—buy a cheap small-block Chevy, add a Holley Sniper nitrous kit, change the drivetrain, and hit the sideshow. Almost all Camaro/Nova suspension parts will be included. If you look long enough at the grille and headlights, you’ll see the face of a 1972 Malibu. (See ad here.)
We’re on the fence about this one (El Paso), but because of its ultra-sexy shape, we’re inclined to recommend it from a daring perspective. If the cabin hadn’t been so well punched and the rear end hadn’t hit the gas tank filler neck, it would have been a slam dunk. We love the big Buick 430ci mill, sweet styling, and straight sheet metal (except for the rear bumper) on this big, beautiful girl. If you can get the trade price down to $1,000 or even $1,200, pull the trigger. (See the announcement here.)
Located in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area, but listed on El Paso Craigslist for its larger market, the Colonnade-style GM A-body is always going to get our blood pumping. Chevy made millions of them back in the day, and many parts are still plentiful because they share mechanics with so many other cars. It needs a better fender on the driver’s side, and there is some rust under the vinyl top, but everything seems to be there and taken care of. These machines are still relatively common, so this (or one like it) can be had for under $2,000. (See the announcement here.)
Selling A Car Worth Less Than $2,000
When Ford updated the Thunderbird in 1964, it had the unfortunate distinction of debuting a few months before the groundbreaking Mustang, with which it shared much of its styling vocabulary. Don’t get me wrong, this T-bird (El Paso) is packed with quality luxury touches that can never be found in cars at this price point. In our opinion, at the low price (an opinion not shared by the market), the 1964-66 T-bird is a lot of fun for the dollar. This ongoing West Texas project has potential, with this trim and interior mostly intact except for a slightly torn upholstery. (See the announcement here.)
If you’re a Mopar person and on a budget, then the compact A-Body is your choice. If so, this 1975 Dodge Dart Sport (Pecos, Texas) could be your lucky number. The seller details a few minor issues that the car guys don’t care about (the gauges don’t work, headlight ding), but there isn’t even a blemish on the upholstery. Forget baby-poo paint; Buy it now, or consider bidding on it if there’s competition. (See the announcement here.)
The Mercury Comet was a sibling to the Ford Falcon and an older cousin to the Mustang, meaning that important mechanical elements (engines, transmission, transmission, suspension, brakes) were widely available, except for model-specific trim and sheet metal. If you don’t mind driving a four-door (they’re getting more popular by the day), then this wonderfully aged 1965 Comet Caliente (Pleasanton, TX) might be for you. It really is a typical old lady’s car and has literally no scratches or dents on it. Patina likes this
