Both used car dealers and internet dealers tend to get a bad rap, and the same goes for people selling cars online.

Craigslist has that local feel, but that doesn’t mean everyone who posts a car for sale is a neighbor. While there are many real people who want to sell their cars individually rather than trade in, there are also scammers who want to take your money for a car that doesn’t exist or sell you a car in poor condition.

“Ever since Henry Ford opened his shop, consumers have been victims of fraudulent auto deals,” Donald E. Petersen, a Florida consumer protection attorney who specializes in fraud cases, told Business Insider.

We asked consumer protection experts about the biggest scams people should watch out for when buying a car on Craigslist, and they said so.

This is one of the biggest things to look out for in Craigslist posts: a car that doesn’t actually exist. Scammers copy and paste images from a real post and then fake listings in dozens of cities.

Be wary of a dealer you’re afraid to meet in person, and don’t spend money on a car you’ve never seen. Katherine Hutt, director of communications for the Better Business Bureau, told Business Insider that she’s seen the same photos listed on dozens of websites across the country. “Who knows where the original car is?” she said she. “The scammer continued to use the same photo repeatedly with multiple victims.”

Biggest Scams To Avoid When Buying A Car On Craigslist

The BBB recommends copying an image from the listing and doing a reverse image search on Google to see if the car you are looking at is the real thing. If the car appears on multiple websites in multiple cities, you can bet it’s a fake.

The same goes for the text: Scammers don’t always want to make a completely new listing for every vehicle. Google an excerpt from the Craigslist description and see if there are other listings that use the same words.

While there is nothing illegal about selling your car to an individual rather than going through a dealership, people who sell a certain number of vehicles per year (the number varies from state to state) are required to obtain a license. Those who don’t and pretend to be individual sellers are known as cobblestone sellers.

There’s probably a reason why they try to get around the rules licensed dealers must follow, like a money-back guarantee if your car turns over a lemon. Petersen said that curbside vendors are “often temporary or, at the very least, difficult to locate.”

If something goes wrong, you and the authorities will have a hard time tracking down that cobblestone dealer.

Unless you have a mechanic’s level of knowledge about cars, your untrained eye might not notice that high-quality parts have been replaced with substandard parts or that air bags are missing.

Your mechanic will be able to tell you if there’s a problem with the car, so ask the dealer if they can go to a trusted professional, not the person they’re supposedly renting to, before confirming.

“If a dealer won’t let you take it to a mechanic before you buy it, go somewhere else right away,” Petersen said.

Many sellers make a deal by pushing buyers, and in the case of Craiglist, it gets personal. Scammers tug at your heart to encourage you to make a rash decision based on an unfortunate history.

They might say they are about to be deployed by the military, or they might claim they lost their job and can’t pay rent without selling their car.

“Scammers often have bad luck stories to get your sympathy,” says Hutt. “Because of their urgency, they force you to pay quickly before thinking twice or seeking someone else’s advice.”

How To Spot Red Flags When Buying And Selling Vehicles

With fake listings, scammers know that if they ask for $20,000 upfront, buyers’ alarms will go off, so they’ll take it bit by bit. They will often argue that there is high demand for the car, so they cannot guarantee a well below average price unless you pay for it.

“The scammer will want the money in smaller amounts, not all at once,” says Hutt. “First a deposit, then payment, then shipping.”

You just took a look, paid big bucks for a car you’d never see.

Escrow sites are designed to protect you as a consumer. You pay to a third-party site instead of sending directly to the seller, and if something goes wrong, escrow will return your money to you, not the scammer.

But scammers know that online shoppers are looking for this protection, so they trick you into thinking you’re getting into a safe deal by spoofing an existing deposit site or creating your own.

Don’t automatically trust a seller-recommended escrow site. The BBB recommends researching the site yourself and trusting only government-licensed escrow services.
