Creating A Quiz In Google Forms – Editor’s note: For Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re highlighting how Google supports teachers. Today, we’re announcing six improvements to Google Forms Quiz to help educators save time. Stay tuned here and follow us on Twitter throughout the week to see how we celebrate.

In the two years since we launched quizzes in Google Forms, teachers have expanded the tool’s capabilities both inside and outside the classroom. Today, we’re announcing six new features based on valuable feedback from educators, designed to help educators continue to use Google Forms quizzes in creative ways:

1. Quiz answer suggestions: Using Google’s machine learning, Forms can now predict the correct answer as a teacher types the question, as well as provide options for incorrect answers. If you give a pop quiz about US capitals, this new feature predicts all the correct capitals for each state—and even some curveballs, like Charlotte Amalie and San Juan.

2. Answer auto-completion: Machine learning also helps teachers save time with more predictive analysis. After you enter one answer, Forms now suggests related answers. For example, if a question requires days of the week as answer options, Google Forms will automatically fill in the remaining answers. In addition, this feature is now available in 14 languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, German and Arabic. “I love this feature, it saves so much time. The ability to type something and have Forms suggest things before you finish typing is pretty cool,” said Chris Webb, a math teacher at John Rennie High School in Montreal .

3. Automatic grade checkbox and multiple choice questions: Reviewing quizzes can be time consuming. That is why we have developed a new way to automate the process. Now, in grid and multiple choice grid like questions, you can enter the correct answers in the answer key and completed quizzes are automatically awarded points based on answers. “In the past, there was a lot of repetition for teachers who tried to ask such questions. But this [feature] saves time, collects all the data in one sheet in a very smart way, and gives teachers full control over the assessment, says Webb.

4. Give decimal numbers: You can give partial grades for a paper test, and now you have the same flexibility in Google Forms. If an answer is partially correct, you can give half or a quarter of a point, making the numbers more accurate. Like all grades in Google Forms, they are automatically added up and synced with Google Classroom.

5. Improve understanding with YouTube video feedback: You can now provide highly personalized feedback to students by attaching a YouTube video. If a student doesn’t understand a concept or needs extra practice, you can link them to a YouTube video so they can watch the material for themselves.

6. See the total score of a quiz: Teachers told us that they want a way to quickly refer to the total score of a quiz while editing. There are now a series of bullet points at the top of the quiz that will update as you create or edit questions.

These updates will be rolled out over the coming weeks. With Google’s machine learning in Forms, creating quizzes and assessments is faster, easier, and more automated and customizable than ever before. We hope these new features give even more time back to hard-working teachers! It is easy to create a quiz that stands out with Google Forms.
