Do U Put Serum On Before Moisturizer – It’s no secret I love skin care products. Many followers ask what specific skin care products I use and how to use them regularly. Over the years, the skin care products I use have changed and evolved but so has the order in which I use them. Here’s a handy graphic I made so you can remember the order in which you use your products and if you want more skincare content you can find all my skincare posts here.
This is my current day and night skin care routine. I don’t use a full line or full kit because I’ve found a combination of products that work for my skin. If you are looking for a disposable skin care kit, I would recommend the Tula or Obagi Rx systems if you are dealing with hyperpigmentation. I have found that the best option for my skin is to find a specific product to address a specific problem using a different brand.

CLEANSER //Â I use Revision Brightening cleaner. I also really like the Tula Cleanser and have used it for years. Now that my skin is also from post-baby hormonal acne, I’ve turned to revision. I still play with Tula when I travel, etc. and think both work great! You can save 15% on Tula Cleaners with code CRISTIN. Other honorable mentions include Obagi Foaming Cleanser, Beauty Counter Countertime Oil if you’re looking for a clean option, and Aveeno Foaming Cleanser if you need a drugstore option.
Can I Use Moisturizer While Using Rejuvenating Set?
Toners // I use Jordan Harper’s new M-61 Power Glow Pills or Barefaced Glow Pill Pad II. A common myth is that a toner is an extra step to clean your skin, but your skin should be completely clean when you use it. I use a toner to balance my skin’s pH which helps control oil production and inflammation. Toner is definitely an extra step that you don’t need to do. If you are going to use one, I would recommend one of these high quality toners depending on your skin care needs, the Tula one if you want exfoliation or this one if you are looking for a drugstore toner!
Eye Pads // I love eye pads. I even wrote a whole post about them. My favorite everyday eye patch is Pixi and can be found at Target. But I like it too. I wear it when I have my coffee in the morning or even in the car!
SERUMS // First let me admit that I can get away with serums. I’m currently using this Vitamin C serum and will follow up with this corrective gel if I have breakouts as it helps soften the skin. I use Phloretin CF when my skin is more sensitive, combination oily and prone to acne. Phloretin CF also helps with pigmentation because it works better or suppresses melanin, which causes dark spots. On the other hand, if your skin is more normal and/or dry then you should use CE Ferulic. I am currently using Obagi Vitamin C and I really think that SkinCeuticals and 20% Obagi are excellent, interchangeable options. I believe that if you are going to invest in a single product, you need to invest in a medical grade vitamin C serum. You can read about its benefits here. You always want to wear it when your skin is not wet but not completely dry so it sinks into your pores. You press it against your skin on your face and then in your neck and chest. I even used the back of my hand! It helps your SPF work better and honestly, I would bathe in it.
If you don’t want to spend money on vitamin C, then I would look for something that has a high amount of fat-soluble vitamin C, that is, something that your skin can absorb. I have never used this product but I am impressed with the ingredients of this Sunday Riley serum. While Skinceuticals and Obaji have been my vitamin C serums for a long time, I also really like the Revision C Complex.
Is Moisturiser Necessary?
Spot Treatment // I don’t use spot treatment in the morning but if you want to treat acne, this is the place to do it. I have used beauty counter spot treatment. Tula also has a great spot treatment that I used before using the beauty counter.
MOISTURIZER // There is a big debate about whether to apply moisturizer before or after eye cream. I use a light moisturizer for one and a heavy eye cream so I do my moisturizer before my eye cream. Also, I don’t apply my moisturizer under my eyes. I love Elimus Pro-Collagen Marine Cream.
Eye Cream // My under eye needs. Or maybe I’m just messing it up. I love the combination of this eye serum and this eye cream. You can definitely do this step before moisturizing. It doesn’t matter the order unless you are layered. In this case, thin products will be preferred. As I mentioned earlier I will use these eye pads before starting with the serum if time permits.
Sunscreen // If I’m not wearing a foundation that has sunscreen in it, I always follow it up with this EltaMD or Revision Intellishade Matte Sunscreen.

Day Cream or Foundation // My two current favorite foundations are ItCosmetics CC Cream (currently light medium) for daily use and Charlotte Tilbury Foundation in shade 5 for thick coverage.
Over the years my nightly skin care routine has become very demanding. The order in which I apply my products varies at the end of my routine, and there is some wiggle room depending on the skin care products you typically use.
Cleanser // At night I “double cleanse” which means I remove my makeup and then I cleanse my skin. You can totally use this step if you don’t wear a lot of makeup and/or aren’t crazy like me. I usually remove my makeup, shower and use the same Revision Brightening Cleanser as my morning routine.
ECFOLIATION TREATMENT // If you do drumplaning at home, this is where you do it. I dermaplan once every two weeks, and dr. Dennis Grass twice a week. This is also where you do the exfoliating treatment which you can do several times a week or once a week depending on your skin type. (I need to update the chart to include this step!)
What Order To Do Your Skincare Routine
Toner // At night I use a Bioderma toner or one from Garnier at the drugstore. If you’re doing an exfoliating treatment and your skin is sensitive, you may want to use a soothing toner. Then I follow up with mine using Jordan Harper’s new M-61 Power Glow Pills or Barefaced Glow Pill Pads II. If you are new to exfoliating pads, start using it only 2 days a week in the morning, then do it for 4 days and then every other day and you can work your way up to using it twice a day.
SERUMS // Once your face is clean and you have a fresh sheet, you’ll want to apply your serums and skin care in order from thick to thick consistency. The serum is thin so use it first. I use the same vitamin C serum as I did in the morning. You always want to wear it when your skin is not wet but not completely dry so it penetrates your pores. You press it against your skin on your face and then in your neck and chest. I even used the back of my hand! It helps your SPF work better and honestly, I would bathe in it.
Treatment // Ok so nighttime is when you want to use Tretinoin aka Retin-A (the ingredient is Tretinoin and Retin-A is the brand name for retinol). Spot treatments should also be applied during this part of your skin care routine. I use Obagi Tretinoin cream in 0.05% and it is a doctor’s prescription. If I have acne, I use this dry lotion after Tretinoin, just rub it on my legs.
If you are very sensitive to tretinoin, start by mixing it with your moisturizer and applying it every few days. Then try to apply every few days and immediately follow with a moisturizer. Then you can switch to using it every day and following a moisturizer. Once your skin is conditioned, you should apply it and let it sit for a while before applying moisturizer for maximum benefit.

Facial Oils // Facial oils are an area where I have a lot to learn! I operated under the “I have oily skin, I don’t need hydration” mentality for far too long. Everyone needs moisturizer and hydration, especially people with oily skin. If you don’t give your skin the hydration it needs, it will only produce more oil. I like Kiehls Midnight Recovery Oil and Beauty Counter’s Brightening Face Oil if I
