I went out in the evening and at 11pm I felt strange. My legs were heavy and my calves were burning. I got sick while walking and decided to go home. The next day I woke up with an incredibly swollen leg and pain. In my limited knowledge of kidney failure at the time, swollen feet = water retention. So I thought I would drink two pills of water and relax. At 18.00, my legs were on fire and I could not walk. I texted my specialist and he said it could be gout and I should see a doctor the next morning. Long story short: The doctor diagnosed me with gout.

From that day I started watching myself eat. If you eat foods high in purines, gout will worsen. My gout was originally caused by iron overload, but since I didn’t want to deal with another medication, I decided to treat my gout naturally. I didn’t want the gout to flare up or come back after the gout attack was over. While battling gout, I avoided all forms of meat and poultry. I went completely vegetarian for a week. Then I completely removed meat from the diet. I still eat chicken occasionally, but I stay away from meat. I eat lots of vegetables and try to eat lean foods as often as possible. Since then I can say I haven’t had another attack of gout. My diet is so limited now, it’s scary at times, but honestly, I never want to go through that again in my life. I couldn’t drive because I couldn’t control the car. I had to sell my car and buy an automatic to keep walking. I also had crutches because I couldn’t walk. This experience was not good and I would do anything to avoid it.
Edit: A kidney warrior on Facebook reminded me to add that seafood is very unhealthy. I think this is one of the worst restrictions for me because I love shrimp and crayfish! There are a lot of foods I’m missing, but that’s just my experience. As I mentioned above, always consult your doctor and nutritionist. We all have different experiences.

Excess urate crystals build up in your joints, causing inflammation and the intense pain of a gout attack. Urate crystals form when there is a high level of uric acid in the blood. When your body breaks down purines, it produces uric acid – a naturally occurring substance in your body. Purine compounds, in the body or eating foods high in purines can increase uric acid levels.
