For this article, we talked to experts in the field about everything from running performance—how long it takes to run a 5k to how long it takes to lose weight through running.

You are not alone. Many people turn to running to help them on their weight loss journey, and for good reason.

Technically, running a mile burns about 100 calories. But actual calorie burn can vary depending on a person’s weight, with smaller people burning slightly less and those with more body mass burning slightly more.

It can take about 3,500 calories to burn a pound of fat, so it takes running about 35 miles or about 5 miles a day to lose a pound a week.

However, weight loss is more complicated than calories in and calories out; Lack of proper nutrition and hydration can affect the outcome. And the amount a person needs to eat to maintain their weight can vary quite a bit.

Transform 20: Everything You Need To Know Before Getting Started

So a person really needs to experiment a bit to see what combination of diet and exercise works best to get the results they want. It is generally recommended to lose 1-2 pounds per week, or even less if the runner is running high mileage.

We spoke with Amy Dworecki, CEO and Head Coach for Running with Life. Ami is a multiple Boston Marathon qualifier with 5 different running coaching qualifications, NBHWC board certified qualifications in weight loss coaching, and she herself has lost over 50kg through running.

We asked Ami why so many novice runners gain weight when they start running. Here’s what she had to say:

“Some people may experience weight loss immediately, but a runner’s diet plays an important role. Running can make some people hungry, so if they’re not careful with their intake, they may not see any weight loss (or even gain!).

It’s important to note that even if you see the number on the scale go up when you start your run, it’s probably water weight you’re gaining, not fat.

“Running also uses carbohydrates to build glycogen stores in the muscles to help drive energy, especially as runs get longer. This carbohydrate storage requires storing water with it.” Amy told us.

“That’s why a runner can lose fat but build up glycogen and water stores in their muscles. So even if running burns fat, some people are wrongly discouraged because their actual weight doesn’t show a difference at first.”

“The same effect can happen if they start building lean mass (muscle) right from the start of training. Their lean mass gains offset their fat loss, so even though they’re making positive changes, it won’t show up on the scale right away. .”

Therefore, it is important not to take the number on the scale too seriously when going through your weight loss journey. Your overall health can’t be captured by a single number, and who doesn’t want to put on some muscle mass!

“Because running uses a lot of carbohydrates, if a person eats a low-carb diet, the person may see a rapid loss initially due to the loss of carbohydrate and associated water retention; that decreases with time.”

So if the scale isn’t a good measure of how long it takes to see results from races, how do we measure progress?

If you don’t feel like the work you put in is reflected in the scale, get rid of the scale! Instead, you can track positive changes in your body by observing how your body changes in the mirror, using a measuring tape, tracking how you feel or perform during your running sessions, or noticing how your clothes fit you.

The Truth About Weight Lifting: Why You Aren’t Getting The Results You Deserve!

The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise (such as running) per week to maintain weight. The amount needed for weight loss can be a little higher than that, especially if you don’t make dietary changes.

“Some studies have shown that the type of run may be important, but the results have been mixed. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is good for getting the metabolism up after a run, resulting in a higher overall calorie burn than a workout alone.

HIIT running can burn more calories in less time. However, due to the intensity, there is a limit to how many HIIT workouts can be reasonably done. So someone doing a long run at a moderate pace is able to run more miles overall and therefore more calories overall that way.

Invest in a number and exaggerate it. You should be careful not to cut too many calories in an attempt to lose weight quickly.
