How Long To Wear A Retainer After Braces – Getting rid of braces is a moment eagerly awaited by everyone. But as soon as you think you are free now, the dentist tells you about retainers. Although the idea of using it may frustrate you since you’ve recently gotten rid of braces, it’s important to give yourself the best long-term results. Once your braces are removed, your teeth will need support to stay in their new position. This is achieved using holders. You can choose an invisible type to make it more discreet.
You can choose fixed or removable holders according to your convenience. Fixed retainers are stainless steel wires that are present behind the teeth. They require you to be very careful when brushing. Removable retainers can be taken out and put in as you like, although you should wear them as long as possible. You may experience some discomfort when speaking for the first few days. Once your mouth has adjusted to the retainers, you will be able to carry out your daily activities with ease.
How Long To Wear A Retainer After Braces
You must first wear the retainers all day and night. The only time you can remove it is while eating.
Why Retainers Are Important After Braces
The longer you wear the retainer, the more likely your teeth will adjust. You can use it less often after some time has passed, but it is better to have it as long as possible. Reduce the time gradually as this will give your teeth a chance to adjust. You can start using it at night after using it full time for a long time.
Wear the holder a little longer than you need to use your braces. After that, you can start using it for a few nights every now and then to make sure your teeth stay straight.
Like any other orthodontic wear, retainers must be properly cleaned and maintained to function. When the food you eat remains trapped between the teeth, it can lead to the formation of plaque, which is a sticky layer formed by the action of bacteria in the mouth.
Use a teeth cleaning solution to properly clean your retainers. Every time you take it out of your mouth, wash it with warm water. Do not leave crevices when cleaning, as some food particles may get stuck in them. Use a holder to store it while not in use.
Cleaning Around Braces
Retainers are useful for treating various other conditions such as a tooth cavity or any other ailment related to the jaw. You can learn more about the types of retainers from your dentist. Although it is not very fun to wear, it is very important to keep your beautiful smile intact. If you wear retainers, you should see a dentist for regular cleanings who can thoroughly clean your retainers to keep your mouth healthy. Who among us still has theirs on? Wearing a retainer as an adult is a bit like the dental version of wearing a face mask: put it on, forget it, and wake up feeling refreshed.
For some people, it’s bragging that their high school recruits still fit, but not all of us can be that successful in orthodontics. For the rest of us, the holders go from a watermelon-printed acrylic accessory that earned you credit at the lunch table to a relic found in your childhood bathroom. But is it bad for your teeth if you stop wearing a retainer?
It can be, says Christine Hong, DMD, MS, assistant professor of orthodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry. The only purpose of using a holder is to
, maintaining the new position of ligaments and bones around the teeth that your braces worked hard to establish. “It takes about a year for our body to finish remodeling,” says Dr. Hong. That’s why your dentist will have you wear a full-time retainer for a year after you get your braces off, she says. Then after that year, it’s up to you to make sure you use it “part-time,” she says. This applies even if you got rid of your braces more than ten years ago.

What’s the worst that could happen? If you don’t have your retainer on, your teeth will shift and crowd together, says Dr. Hong. Your teeth will “fall back” and move toward the center of your mouth, especially the bottom teeth, she says, adding, “retainers will stop the movement of the teeth from crowding.”
Once you become an adult, it doesn’t mean your mouth just stops moving. “Teeth are constantly moving from aging and function,” says Dr. Hong. The only real way to ensure that your teeth stay straight and that all your orthodontic money is well spent is to wear your retainer at least some of the time. If your childhood doesn’t fit, don’t force it. You can ask your dentist about getting a new one, or you can consider getting a permanent retainer that a dentist installs on the back of your teeth (meaning it’s completely invisible), says Dr. Hong.
Having said all that, it is important to realize that having straight teeth is not about cosmetics. Dr. Hong says that having crooked teeth can be a health risk because it makes it difficult to floss and clean your teeth. Crooked teeth can also lead to gum disease, bleeding and recession (when the gums recede), she says. “Every case is different, but there are definitely health risks to having crooked teeth, gum problems and cavities being the most common.”
Also, there is absolutely no reason to be ashamed if you have less than straight teeth. And whether you wear your retainer or not, it’s still a good idea to go to the dentist at least once a year, just so your doctor can make sure your mouth is healthy and possibly scold you for not using floss or whatever.
