How Many Calories Should Breakfast Be To Lose Weight
About 45 to 55 percent of breakfast calories should be devoted to carbohydrates, which is about 40 to 55 grams of carbohydrates. Avoid foods that are sugary and overly processed or made with fortified white flour, and choose whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
Meal Timing And Weight Loss: Does It Matter When You Eat?
About 15 to 20 percent of your breakfast calorie intake should be from protein, which works out to about 13 to 20 grams. Getting enough protein at breakfast is important to keep you full through the morning. Studies have shown that eating at least 20 grams of protein for breakfast can also help you lose weight. Eggs, dairy, soy milk, protein powder in smoothies, nuts, seeds and whole grains are all great sources of protein.
Eat about 10 to 15 grams, which is about 30 to 35% of your total calories for breakfast. Instead of saturated fats like bacon and cheese, choose monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) like olive oil, nuts, seeds and butter made from them, and avocados.
Aim to get about 25% of the recommended daily total of 25 grams per day. That comes out to about six grams, but it’s okay to go over that as long as you don’t upset your digestive system. Berries, pears, apples, greens and other vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains can help you achieve this goal.
If you follow the carb equation above, you don’t have to worry about overdoing the sugars, especially if you’re eating a combination of foods like fruit, whole grains, and dairy. But to be aware of the approximate number, stick to 36 grams or less. And when it comes to added sugar, try not to exceed six grams — the equivalent of 1.5 teaspoons of any sweetener (white sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, honey or agave).

Ideally, you should eat breakfast 30 to 60 minutes after waking up. If you don’t like to eat anything big first, divide this meal into two parts, one at bedtime and the other half about an hour and a half later. This also works well if you exercise in the morning and prefer not to have a full stomach during your workout. If you exercise, you could try eating the carbohydrate portion of breakfast (fruit, toast, etc.) before your workout and the protein-focused portion afterwards.
