ATLANTA — Former Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery made history Friday as part of a three-member investment group approved to buy the team.
The change in ownership comes after pressure on former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a Republican who has angered WNBA players with her opposition to the league’s racial justice initiatives, to sell her share of the Dream.
Real estate investor Larry Gottesdiener was approved as the majority owner of the team. The investor group also includes Montgomery and Suzanne Abair, president of Northland Investment Corp. in Massachusetts, the firm Gottesdiener founded.
What Is The Wnba’s Core Rule? A Guide To The Core Designation
Montgomery becomes the first former player to become both owner and executive of a WNBA franchise. He said he would play an active role with Abair in running the team.
Montgomery said he began considering his role in an ownership group after Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James tweeted about the possibility of being part of one.
“That tweet caught my attention,” Montgomery said, adding that he “started to find out if this could become a real possibility.”
She said she was also motivated by James’ role in the More Than One Vote campaign that worked to increase voter turnout and reduce voter suppression in the black community.

James applauded Montgomery’s role as owner, tweeting: “So proud of this Queen. That’s all we are!”
Montgomery sat out the 2020 season to focus on social justice issues and recently announced her retirement from the league after 11 seasons and two WNBA championships.
“I think it’s great that Renee stepped up after retiring from the game to continue to have an impact on the game,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Friday. “I’ve seen his strong work ethic. I’ve seen his defense and knowledge of the game, and I’m sure he’ll be an asset to Larry and Suzanne and a great asset to the team.”
Montgomery, 34, won WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx in 2015 and 2017. He was an All-Star with the Connecticut Sun in 2011, when he set a career high with his average of 14.6 points per game. She was the 2012 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year.

The approval from the WNBA and NBA Board of Governors was expected and unanimous. That means co-owner Mary Brock also sold her share of the team.
Although his business is based in Newton, Massachusetts, Gottesdiener (pronounced Got-es-DEE-ner) said the team will remain in Atlanta.
The League’s players had asked Loeffler to sell her 49% stake in the Dream after she wrote a letter to Engelbert over the summer opposing the league’s advocacy for racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Dream players wore T-shirts that read “Vote Warnock” in support of Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock, who defeated Loeffler in the Georgia Senate runoff. Warnock’s victory, along with Jon Ossoff’s victory in the other Georgia runoff, gave the Democrats control of the Senate.

A high-profile campaign against Loeffler by players at a team he owned was credited with fueling Warnock’s candidacy.
“I want to take this moment to thank the players of the WNBA, especially the Dream players,” Engelbert said Friday. “They put them in a difficult position. I was proud of the way they handled the situation. They stood up for their values, they stood up for professionalism. They served as a role model with their defense and continue to do so.”
“Last year, the Dream players refused to shut up and bargain,” Gottesdiener said. “They found their collective voice and the world listened. We were inspired by these brave women who championed sport and activism in the midst of the pandemic and want to celebrate and honor them.
Engelbert, Montgomery and Gottesdiener would not repeat the controversy on a conference call Friday. Instead, they kept their focus on the team’s future.

“Breaking down barriers for minorities and women by being the first former WNBA player to have an ownership interest and leadership role in the team is an opportunity I take very seriously,” said Montgomery.
Montgomery is in his first season as a studio analyst on Fox Sports Southeast’s Atlanta Hawks telecasts. She said she plans to continue in that role.
