How Many Weeks Pregnant When You Find Out – OK, “How many weeks pregnant am I” seems like a funny thing for Dr. . This is true even if you religiously follow your cycles and even if you suspect that you know the exact date of conception.
Pregnancy lasts an average of 40 weeks or 280 days. But it’s counted from the first day of your last period, before you stop bleeding, before you ovulate, and (often) before you do any, um, baby-rearing activities.
How Many Weeks Pregnant When You Find Out
This means that if you have a 28 day cycle, you are already two weeks pregnant when you ovulate and four weeks until your next period. Confusing, right?!
Weeks Pregnant: Guide To Pregnancy At 37 Weeks
Home pregnancy tests measure hCG in the urine, which begins to be produced immediately after implantation. However, it takes several days for enough to accumulate in the urine to detect. Home pregnancy tests will not show a positive pregnancy until at least 5-6 days after the expected date of your next period. You are now more than three weeks pregnant. If you took the test on the day of your expected period, you are considered four weeks pregnant (if your cycle is 28 days).
Many doctors use a method that sounds like a math test problem: Take the first day of your last period, add seven days and subtract three months. For example, if your last period started on March 1, add seven days to get March 8, then go back three months. February 8, January 8, December 8. – it’s your deadline!
Not everyone has a cycle of 28 days, and for some women, calculating the due date based on the date of conception may be more accurate. This only works if you track ovulation based on symptoms or use ovulation test trips. And remember, the date of conception is not necessarily the date you had sex, as sperm linger in the reproductive system for several days.
But if you know your ovulation date, add 266 days and that’s your due date.
When Did You Find Out You Were Pregnant?
If you are pregnant through IVF, you can calculate your due date with the embryo transfer date. If the embryo was transferred on day 3, count 263 days from the transfer date. If you had a 5-day transfer, count 261 days.
Your doctor or midwife can order you a dating ultrasound to measure the developing embryo and more precisely calculate your due date. The earlier the dating ultrasound is done, the more accurate it is. (Nurses usually aim to do this between 6 and 11 weeks of pregnancy.) If the embryo is still quite small, the ultrasound technician can use a transvaginal wand to perform an intrapelvic ultrasound in addition to the usual gel. Abdominal ultrasound method.
As your pregnancy progresses, it can be difficult to remember how many weeks you are pregnant (and what trimesters that means). If you’re ever confused, go back to the first day of your last period and count from there.
As you can see, calculating the expiration date is not an exact science and can change as more information becomes available. For example, if your periods are irregular, your original estimated due date based on the first day of your last period may change after your date ultrasound. Similarly, if your fundus measurement (the distance from the top of your pubic bone to the top of your uterus) is larger than average, it may indicate that you are actually further along in your pregnancy than first thought.
How Early Can You See A Baby On A Scan?
Dates are important because they help doctors and midwives assess how your pregnancy is progressing and when you should start if you are late. But remember, there’s no guarantee when you go into labor – your guess as to when your baby will be born is as good as anyone else’s!
