You may have been wearing braces for months or years to improve your teeth and smile. Your retainer’s job is to maintain that gear position. Wearing your orthodontic retainers shouldn’t hurt; however, retainers can sometimes make pain and discomfort worse.
Just as your muscles hurt when you start exercising, the stiffness will go away over time. Likewise, the followers were injured at first. It’s because you’re not used to it. That’s why your orthodontist keeps you wearing your retainer full-time for a year after you remove your braces, he says. Then, after the year, it’s up to you to make sure you wear it “part time,” he says. This is true even if you removed your braces more than a decade ago.

What’s the worst that could happen? If you don’t wear retainers, your teeth will shift and crowd, says Dr. Hong. Your teeth will “fall back” and move toward the center of your mouth, especially your bottom teeth, he says, adding, “the followers will stop further tooth movement when they are crowded.”
Once you grow up, it doesn’t mean your mouth just stops changing. “Teeth are constantly moving from aging and function,” says Dr. Hong. The only real way to ensure that your teeth stay straight, and all your orthodontic dollars are put to good use, is to wear retainers at least occasionally. If yours from childhood doesn’t suit you right away, don’t force it. You can ask your orthodontist to get you a new one, or you can consider getting a permanent retainer that the orthodontist puts on the back of your teeth (meaning it’s completely invisible), says Dr. Hong.
All of this said, it’s important to explain that having straight teeth isn’t just about cosmetics. Dr. Hong says that having crooked teeth can be a health risk, as it makes it more difficult for you to floss. Crooked teeth can also lead to gum disease, bleeding, and recession (when your gums recede), he says. “Every case is different, but there are definitely health risks with having crooked teeth, the most common gum problems and cavities.”
Also, there is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed if you have crooked teeth. And whether you wear retainers or not, it’s best to go to the dentist at least once a year, just so your doctor can make sure your mouth is actually healthy — and maybe scold you for not flossing, or whatever.
