And it has the potential to be dangerous, giving employers, online stalkers and identity thieves access to your personal information without you ever knowing, things like your current and former addresses, phone numbers and emails, names of your relatives and even arrest records.
So how can you take back control of your information? First, you can start by checking some well-known data broker sites for your personal information.
Some sites require a copy of your license or other ID to delete your data. But before you send it, cross out all excess information, such as your license number and social security number.
If you’d rather let someone else do the work, CR says sites like DeleteMe, Kanary and OneRep charge about $100 per year to delete your information from multiple sites.

If you choose to work alone, CR recommends making a list of the sites you choose to leave. This is because you should check back periodically to make sure your information doesn’t show up again.

It’s never a bad time to get your internet privacy duck at once and effectively “remove” yourself from the internet. You’ll never be able to remove yourself from the internet, but there are ways to minimize your digital footprint, which will reduce the chances of your personal data getting out there. But be careful: Removing your information from the Internet, as I explain below, can negatively affect your ability to communicate with potential employers. Still interested? Here are some ways to make your digital self disappear.
Think about which networks you have social media profiles on. Besides the big ones (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn), do you still have old accounts on sites like Tumblr? my room? What about your Reddit account? Which shopping site did you sign up for? It can usually include information stored on Amazon, Gap.com, Macys.com and others.

If for some reason an account cannot be deleted, please change the information in the account to something other than your actual information. Something fake or completely random.
There are companies out there that collect your information. They are called data brokers, and they have names like Spokeo, Whitepages.com, and PeopleFinder, as well as many others. They collect data from everything you do online and then sell that data to interested parties, usually to more specifically advertise to you and sell you stuff.

Now you can search these sites individually and process each site individually to remove your name. The problem is that the opt-out procedure for each site is different and sometimes involves sending a fax and filling out actual physical paperwork. Physical. Written work. How many more years?

Be warned: If you remove yourself from this data broker site, you will also remove yourself from Google search results, making it harder for people to find you. First check with your phone company or mobile operator to make sure you are not listed online and get them to remove your name if they are.

If you want to remove an old forum post or an embarrassing blog post you wrote back then, please contact the webmaster of the respective page. You can look at the About Us or Contact section of the website to find the right person to contact or go to whois.com and search for the domain name you want to contact. Unfortunately, private site operators are under no obligation to remove your posts. So when contacting these sites, be polite and clearly state why you want the post removed. Hopefully they will actually follow through and remove it.
If someone has posted sensitive information about you, such as a social security number or bank account number, and the webmaster of the site where it was posted won’t remove it, you can submit a takedown request to Google to have it removed.

Say there’s a website that contains information about you that you want to get rid of – like your former employer’s personnel page, a few months after you’ve changed jobs. You contact them to get them to update the page. They do, but when you Google your name, the page still appears in your search results – even though your name is nowhere when you click the link. This means that the old version of this page is cached on Google servers.
This is where this tool comes into play. Submit the URL to Google in the hope that it will update its servers and delete the cached search results so that you are no longer linked to that page. There is no guarantee that Google will remove cached information, for any reason, but it should try to remove as much of your online presence from the Internet as possible.
How To Remove Your Phone Number From The Internet
Depending on the type of email account you have, the number of steps to take will vary.
You must log in to your account and find the option to delete or close the account. Some accounts remain open for a certain period of time if you want to reactivate them.
An email address is required to complete the previous step, so make sure this is your last.
Remember to be patient as you go through this process and don’t expect it to be over in one day. You also have to accept that there are some things you cannot permanently remove from the Internet.
