5 Pre-Book Pre-Reading Activities Before you start reading with your students, do some pre-reading activities to stimulate interest and increase comprehension. Here are some activities that might work well in your classroom. 1. Listen to the title and predict what the story might be. 2. Predict what the story will be about by looking at the description on the cover. 3. Discuss other Thomas Rockwell books that students have read or heard. 4. Answer these questions. Are you interested in children who do unusual things? Stories about annoying passengers? Stories about groups of friends? Stories that involve challenges or bets? 7 Thomas Rockwell was born on March 13, 1933, in New Rochelle, New York, the son of Norman and Mary Rockwell. His father was a very famous artist who often painted pictures of small town life in America. Thomas Rockwell loved to read when he was a child. In 1955, Mr. Rockwell married a woman named Gail Sudler. Mrs. Rockwell is an artist and illustrated one of her husband’s books. The Rockwells have two children, Barnaby and Abigail. Although Mr. Rockwell liked to read as a child, his enthusiasm for literature waned as he grew older. His interest in literature was revived many years later when he read nursery rhymes to his son. Mr. Rockwell became interested and excited to read these poems and began to write his own poems. He then moved on to fairy tales and picture books. The first book that Rockwell published on the author was titled Racketeer-Bang and Other Verses. It was published in 1969 and is the book that Mrs. Rockwell described to her husband. Not long after Racketee-Bang, Mr. Rockwell Humpf!, Squawk! and he wrote three more books, The Neon Motorcycle. The most famous of his works is Mr. Rockwell’s Fifth Book (published in 1973). He won many awards for this funny story. These honors include the Mark Twain Award, the Golden Archer Award, the Sequoia Award, the Nene Award, and the California State Honor.
