A stupid boy named Billy Forrester (Luke Benward) has a weak stomach and vomits easily. He and his parents Mitch (Tom Cavanagh), Helen (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) and his little brother Woody (Ty Panitz) have just moved to a new town. Billy tells his mother that he doesn’t want to go to school because he’s going to be a “new kid”. She guarantees that he will make friends and that everything will be fine.

But at school he became the target of school bullies Joe Guire (Adam Hicks), his two “toaders” Plug (Blake Garrett) and Bradley (Philip Daniel Bolden) and his fellow groupie Benjy. (Ryan Malgarini), Techno-Mouth (Andrew Gillingham), Twitch (Alexander Gould) and Donny (Alexander Agate). They looked at him rudely and called him “Billy F”. (That’s how his name is spelled on his lunch box). Plug and Bradley steal his lunch box. He sits behind Erika Tansy (Hallie Eisenberg), an unusually tall girl who is ridiculed (called “Erk”).

At lunch, Billy turns on his thermometer and pours it out of his pile of live worms. Sick, he almost threw up before he regained his strength. Then, confidently, he threw one in Joe’s face. Circus performer Adam Simms (Austin Rogers) is certain that Joe will hit Billy with his ring (“The Death Ring”), which is rumored to have killed Joe in eighth grade.

The next day after school, Joe, Plug and Benjy catch up with Billy as he returns home. Joe makes a bet: Billy must eat worms ten times a day (this Saturday) without throwing up, and the loser must come to school with the worms in his pants and walk through the hall through everyone. Billy knew he couldn’t back out of the bet, so he accepted.

The next day, Billy partnered with Adam Simms. After eating the first worm “Le Big Porker”, the gangster was caught by garden security for using barbecue in the garden without adult supervision, but beyond him. Billy grew more confident with each mask he swallowed.

When they cooked the second/third worm “The Greasy Brown Toad Bloater Special” at Adam’s Uncle Restaurant (Clint Howard) they were fired for having worms in the restaurant. After Billy ate the fourth meal of “The Burning Fireball” and burned his mouth, Twitch and Techno-Mouth left Joe’s team and became his new best friends. At Billy Park, the next two worms are the “Barfmallo” and the “Peanut Butter And Worm Jam Sandwich”.

After dinner the boys go to the bait shop to eat their next two worms, “The Green Slusher” and “Radioactive Slime Delight”. The owner of the bait shop (Jo Ann Farabee) tries to hunt them down to steal the two worms. After Joe cheats in an attempt to stop Billy from eating the last “Worm A La Mud” worm, all of his gang members join Billy. Billy eats the last worm before the due date. Nigel Guire (Nick Krause) Joe’s younger brother, who is watching, tries to intimidate and humiliate himself in order to defeat. Billy and the rest of the group get up and tell Nigel to leave him alone and he leaves.

After thinking about that night, Billy went back to school. He explains to Joe that the second worm was eaten by burdock after it was accidentally placed in his oatmeal on the Brown Toad. Since they both lost the bet, they both put worms in their pants and the other kids watched them. They are then interrupted by Burdock, who almost catches them when the mask falls out of Billy’s pants, which Joe covers. After Burdock returned to his office, the kids ran out and celebrated as Billy and Joe both took the mask out of their pants and threw it into the air.

The film debuted at No. 11 with $4,003,537 in the US and Canada. It closed seven weeks later with a total of $13,040,527 domestically and $55,787 overseas for a global total of $13,096,314.

The film has largely received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes shows that the film is rotten with a rating of 59%. “This fear factor for children is naturally good and daring enough,” the site says. Metacritic gave the film a meta score of 56 (mixed or average rating).

The Filthy Critic gave the film four out of “Five fingers” for its practical demonstration of how children actually act. ReelView’s James Berardinelli gave a somewhat positive review (2½ out of 4 stars), but thought the potential audience too narrow: “It’s intended for pre-pubescent males and not to make too many concessions to members of the population.” No other science.” And continued:

How to Eat Fried Worms belongs to the missing species – Live Action Family Movies. Even the best genres (like Holes and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) don’t attract large audiences, so such middling productions face an uphill battle.

The Christmas Project (2016)

Boston Globe reviewer Ty Burr gave it two out of four stars and, comparing the book to the film, said:

There was a kid named Billy who dared to eat worms, and it was the same with its source. In fact, all movies must be the same with their source. My 9-year-old friend whispered to her during the show, “This is really gross.” “But I like it,” he then added.

From the parents’ point of view, two feet off the ground, How to Eat Fried Worms is the least convenient adaptation of the incredible children’s book produced by Walden Media, which focuses on families (because Winn-Dixie, Hoot, Holes).

Bad eating is matched with a good message as the story encourages young people to be themselves, keep their word and accept children who are different.

This is a story that could go too far in the direction of an interesting fairy tale, showing how children overcome their fear of ridicule – but instead maintain strong disrespect.

The worms have a percentage of the total that is easy for children, but actually cute to stand up to threaten.

Take your child to see how to eat fried worms, but resist the normal salivation at the concession stand.

It’s a happy and well-intentioned end to an unimaginative summer diversion of top-notch kids’ movies.

Fried Worms are fun hooters as long as you don’t mind the worms’ point of view.

Somewhere in the fried worm eating mode is a message about keeping your word and the problem of peer pressure.

If it grows even bigger when it comes out, it still feels less like Nickelodeon, especially with adults who are a bit of a cartoon character and kids with a unique character.

When it’s time for a movie to share its lessons, it does so in a way that kids won’t feel like they’re being forced to eat their cauliflower or live worms for it.

Issues like family harmony, justice, right and wrong, and the truth never go out of style, and it comes through all solid and clear in this imperfect film, yet strong and feel good.

This is to hope that its old-school feel appeals to today’s kids, because we could actually use more movies. As smart and sweet as this.
