How To Feel Better About Yourself After A Breakup – Happiness is interesting because we all have different ideas about what it is and how to find it. It’s also no surprise that it’s the first value of culture when you look at our slide about it. So naturally we live with it.
I wanted to be happier, as I’m sure most people would be, so I thought it would be interesting to find some science-backed ways to be happier. Here are the top ten I found.
How To Feel Better About Yourself After A Breakup
You may have recently seen the seven-minute science experiment featured in the New York Times. So if you thought exercise was something you didn’t have time for, you might just be right.

Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that it is actually an effective strategy for overcoming depression. In a study reported in Sean Achor’s book,
, three groups of patients treated their depression with medication, exercise, or a combination of the two. The results of this study really surprised me. Although all three groups experienced similar improvements in their happiness levels at baseline, follow-up assessments showed significant differences:
After six months, the groups were tested to assess their relapse rate. Of those who used the drug alone, 38 percent relapsed into depression. Those in the joint group fared less well, with a relapse rate of 31%. However, the biggest shock came from the exercise group: Their relapse rate was only 9 percent!
You don’t have to be stressed to reap the benefits of exercise. It can help you relax, improve your brain power, and even improve your body, even if you don’t lose weight.
How Can I Feel Better? — How Are You Feeling?
Body weight, body condition, and body image were assessed in 16 men and 18 women before 6 × 40 minutes of exercise and 6 × 40 minutes of reading. Body weight and posture did not change in both conditions. However, various aspects of body image improve after exercise compared to before.
We’ve explored exercise in depth before and looked at what it does to our brain, such as releasing proteins and endorphins that make us feel good, as you can see in the image below.
We know that sleep helps our bodies recover from the day and repair itself, helping us to focus and be more productive. Turns out it’s also important to our happiness.
Negative stimuli are processed by the amygdala; positive or neutral memories are processed by the hippocampus. Sleep deprivation affects the hippocampus more than the amygdala. The result is that people who don’t sleep well can’t remember happy memories, but remember sad ones well. In one of Walker’s experiments, sleep-deprived college students tried to memorize a list of words. They could recall 81% of words with negative connotations, such as “cancer.” But they were able to recall only 31% of words with a positive or neutral meaning, such as “sun” or “basket”.

That sleep shows that it affects our sensitivity to negative emotions. Using a facial recognition task during the day, the researchers studied how sensitive the participants were to positive and negative emotions. Those who worked until noon without sleeping became more sensitive to negative emotions such as fear and anger later in the day.
Using a facial recognition task, we here show enhanced responses to anger and fear emotions throughout the day without sleep. However, occasional sleep suppresses these negative emotional responses to anger and fear, and on the contrary, increases the rate of positive expressions (happiness).
Of course, how well you sleep (and for how long) probably affects how you feel when you wake up, which can change the rest of your day. This graph in particular, which shows how your brain activity decreases, is a great insight into the importance of getting enough sleep to be productive and happy:
Researchers have found that how employees feel at work affects how they feel throughout the day. Early climate was related to their perceptions of customers and how they related to customers’ feelings. And most importantly, for managers, employee behavior has a clear impact on job performance, including how many employees worked and how well they worked.
Steps To Be More Proud Of Yourself
Sleep is another topic we’ve talked about before, and how much sleep we really need to be productive.
Our commute to the office can have a huge impact on our happiness. The fact that we often do this twice a day, five days a week, it is not surprising that its effects will increase over time and make us less and less happy.
… although many situations we choose do not affect our happiness in the long run because we get used to them, people never get used to their daily rush because sometimes the traffic is bad and sometimes not. Or as Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert put it, “Driving on the road every day is a kind of hell.”
We often compensate by having a bigger house or a better job, but these compensations don’t work:

Two Swiss economists who examined the effect of travel on happiness found that such factors cannot compensate for the unhappiness caused by long-term travel.

Even for introverts, social time is very important when it comes to improving our happiness. Several studies have shown that time spent with friends and family makes a difference in how happy we are as a whole.
Ways To Feel Better About Yourself
We are happy when we are with family, we are happy when we are with friends, and almost everything we think is happy is actually just a way to find more family and friends.
In a March 2008 newspaper interview on scholarship topics, Vaillant asked, “What have you learned from the men who studied on the scholarship?” Vaillant’s answer: “The only important thing in life is your relationship with other people.”
Men’s relationships at age 47, he found, predicted later life adjustment better than any other variable except protection. Sibling relationships seem especially strong: 93 percent of men who thrived at age 65 were close to a brother or sister when they were younger.
Using the British Household Panel Survey, I find that increased social contact is worth an extra £85,000 a year in terms of life satisfaction. Real change in income, on the other hand, buys very little happiness.

. So we can increase our annual income by hundreds of thousands of dollars and not be as happy as if we were increasing our social capacity.
We found that if Terman’s participant truly felt that they had friends and family they could rely on when they were in trouble, that person could have a better life. Those who love and take care of themselves the most, we predict, will live the longest. Surprise: our prediction was wrong… Beyond the greatness of social media, the clear benefit of social networking was helping others. Those who helped their friends and neighbors, gave advice to others and cared for others, tended to live to old age. Go outside – happiness increases at a temperature of 13.9 ° C
Time out on a good day offers great benefits; Research has found that spending 20 minutes outside in good weather not only improves mood, but also improves thinking and memory performance.
This is good news for those of us who worry about fitting new habits into our already busy schedules. Twenty minutes is enough time to spend outside that you can fit into your commute or even your lunch break.

Outside, by the beach, on a warm and sunny weekend afternoon is the perfect place for many. In fact, participants were found to be happier outdoors in all natural environments than in cities.
A study published in 2011 found that the current temperature has a greater impact on our happiness than variables such as wind speed and humidity or the average temperature of the day. It also found that happiness reaches 13.9°C, so check the weather forecast before stepping outside for 20 minutes of fresh air.
The link between productivity and temperature is another topic we’ve talked about a lot here. It’s amazing what a small change in temperature can do.
One of the tips I got is that in order to be happy, you need to help others. In fact, 100 hours a year (or two hours a week) is the perfect amount of time we have to help others enrich our lives.
