Not only has it had its ups and downs and it’s been an emotionally difficult issue for me over the years, but it’s still an ongoing journey for me.

So for me, I struggled with the insecurity and discomfort of sharing past and present photos of my skin, but also with a bit of “imposter syndrome;” also happens. Like, how can I talk about healing my hormonal acne when I still have imperfect skin? Then I realized that this is exactly the approach I take when it comes to body image, so why should this be any different? If anything, those of us who deal with skin problems are more knowledgeable about skin care than those who don’t have many skin problems because we had to figure things out!

It’s true, so don’t feel bad about worrying about your skin. Having a “skin problem” can make anyone feel vulnerable. Talking about body image and the confidence issues surrounding that body image has become more common (yes!), very few people are open and unfiltered about their skin issues on social media. We also live in a time where skincare is less talked about and current beauty trends focus on glowing skin and minimal makeup – the “no makeup” look. I get the feeling that they don’t have “good enough” skin to use lesser products from brands like Glossier. I’m sorry to hear that, because I can really understand. I’m not a fan of wearing makeup every day, and so I dream of being able to roll out of bed, wash my face, and head out the door without a second thought. I’m still not at the point where I’m comfortable meeting people or going to work events without foundation to cover the lights, but I’m happy to run the community in an open-face environment—and it makes me happy. Time to get here.

But the biggest mental hurdle for me to overcome was the stigma that people with sensitive skin don’t take care of themselves. Mainly because it’s not “good”, it affects my work in this health care industry. I’m a healthy person, whether it’s my appearance being qualified as a personal trainer + nutritionist, the quality of my blog or my career as the owner of a health nutrition company. Learning to deal with this insecurity and not being ashamed of it was something I struggled with the most. There is a sense of uneasiness and stress that comes from knowing that I put more effort into my health than most people, but the outside doesn’t match the inside. It’s also amazing because worrying about your skin makes your skin worse, because you’re worrying about it – it might sound a little lost, but I hope this post gives you some peace of mind and hope.

You Can Control Your Skin 100% Through Diet: Yes, there are many dietary changes to help your skin that should be part of the first steps in clearing your skin, I want to emphasize that a) there is no magic food. of your skin and b) For some people, a healthy diet does not cure hormonal acne. Overthinking everything about your diet and skin care can lead to some negative reactions to food (been there!) and lead to more stress which only makes acne worse- getting in good health here was a big deal for me!

It’s just a hormonal rash on your chin: I’ve seen all the acne trajectories facialists, estheticians, and dermatologists share about breakouts on your face—I think for me, there might be a lot of correlation. It has zero geographic correlation that I have been able to follow. Sad to say

Oils that work for everyone: I’ve tried hundreds of products over the years (yes, given them a well-rounded chance over the course of several weeks), and there’s not a single face oil that doesn’t make me break out and I’ll use it for days at a time, and days to begin with. It makes my skin feel like magic and the softness/shape of my skin is amazing. But then a few days later, I’ll get all these clogged pores under the skin that break out over the next few weeks. I’m telling you all this to give you some background on how I put together the best things to change my acne for better and worse!

I had a few common conditions when I was younger that I was (unfortunately) prescribed antibiotics (tetracycline) and all the benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin topicals you can imagine. It seemed to work, and I never had a problem in college- I used a simple 3-step routine a la Neutrogena with a cleanser, salicylic acid topicals, and that was it. While in college, I started getting occasional cystic acne (1-2 spots every few months), but this was the first time in my life that I started getting acne on my cheeks – not so much.

Then in the spring of 2014 I had hip surgery. After struggling through the initial recovery phase and returning to work, my body caught up on me (read more about my Hashimoto’s story here), and thus began the hormonal chapter of my life. . . Acne – cystic, whiteheads, anything and everything – absolutely everywhere on my face. This + my other symptoms led me to go on an elimination diet, but out of frustration and encouragement from my doctor at the time I reluctantly went back on the pill. I even cut my hair to hide behind it because I wanted to control my thoughts and stop being ashamed of my skin. With all of this I was back to happy skin in 5 months and didn’t know I had Hishimoto’s, so I started eating gluten and dairy again…

It was early 2016 and I had just been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and my hormonal acne was slowly coming back. 2016 was one of the worst years of my life due to my dad’s cancer + later and being stuck in a toxic relationship, so my anxiety increased, I also decided to go off the birth control pill (it didn’t do much for my skin in any way, just My hormones are messed up like crazy). In mid-2016, I finally gave up gluten for good and focused on gut health/all anti-inflammatory issues. I slowly started switching to non-toxic products for body + hair and home care. My hormonal breakouts were still stressing me out, so I tried spironolactone at a lower dose of 50mg. By 2017, I was back in treatment, out of a toxic relationship to heal and mourn the loss of my father – my skin was in a better place. Then I started my first job and got sick because #startuplife stressed me out. My skin was more irritated than ever, and for someone who runs three businesses around health, it was embarrassing. It was so frustrating because I was doing “everything right” (I ate well, I kept my weight off, I used all the supplements, I used the best skincare/makeup products).

In July of 2018 I hit a breaking point and realized I needed to reclaim my health and prioritize myself as #1. Since then my skin started to heal again and has been stable ever since, even with acne.
