Well, until now. I have made some improvements to my skin care routine and diet that keep them at bay. Of course, I had to share it with you. 🙂

How To Get Rid Of Hormonal Chin Acne

Here’s what I do to keep my hormonal acne at bay (and how to treat it if you already have it).

Hormonal Acne? 10 Home Remedies That Can Help You Get Back Your Glowing And Healthy Skin

And those pesky hormones are exactly the cause. Progesterone and estrogen, to be exact. Both of these are linked to your menstrual cycle and fluctuate throughout the month.

When you ovulate, estrogen is at its peak. that’s good. Estrogen = healthy, glowing skin. Estrogen gives your skin a beautiful radiant glow and, with the help of progesterone, suppresses testosterone.

However, when the ovulation phase ends, estrogen and progesterone levels decrease. Without these soldiers standing in the way, testosterone would have a field day.

Now that it’s enough to wreak havoc, testosterone tells your skin cells to pump out that sebum like there’s no tomorrow.

Excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells, clogs your pores and breaks out into all kinds of acne: pimples, blackheads, whiteheads. You name it, it’s there.

At the start of your period, acne sets up camp firmly on your face (it especially likes your chin). And!

Hormonal acne is the reason many doctors prescribe the pill to young women, even if they are not yet sexually active.

Hormonal Acne: Causes And Treatment

Birth control pills lower the level of testosterone in your body. Low testosterone = low risk of breakouts.

I’m not on the pill. Personally, I don’t like messing with hormones. Get it wrong and it will ruin you. I prefer to find other ways to control my acne. But if you’re on the pill and it works for you, that’s perfectly fine. It’s all about finding what works for you.

P.S. I know I shouldn’t say this, but if you’re thinking about getting on the pill (even if it’s just for your acne), talk to your doctor.

All the extra sebum your skin produces before your period can easily get trapped in your pores. Especially, when they are full of dead skin cells. The two combine together, unclogging your pores. The result? There are so many breakouts!

How To Safely Treat Your Postpartum Acne

I exfoliate my skin three times a week with glycolic acid to remove dead skin cells from my face. Plus, it hydrates and boosts collagen, keeping my skin firm and supple.

However, a week before my period, I switch to salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid unclogs pores, allowing sebum to flow freely. It prevents breakouts and zaps blemishes you already have.

I use it every morning until the end of my period. If your skin is more sensitive than mine, try two or three times a week.

Are Chin Pimples A Sign Of Hormonal Acne?

P.S. If you can only use one exfoliant, use salicylic acid. Keeping pores closed is your priority here.

My combo skin gets a little oily in my t-zone, but a piece of blotting paper won’t fix that. most of the time

The week before my period, my skin is at its oiliest (thanks, testosterone!) That’s when I pull out the big guns: clay masks.

Clays like kaolin and bentonite absorb excess oil so it doesn’t clog your pores. Bye bye, pimples!

This Is Why You Have Hormonal Acne On Your Jawline

My body had other ideas. Sugar (by the way, carbohydrates turn into sugar in the bloodstream) promotes inflammation. Inflammation is bad on many levels. It is the cause of fatal diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. It accelerates your aging. And it increases your risk of breakouts.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s no way this Italian is giving up pizza for good (or cake, for that matter). However, I seriously cut out grains and sugar.

Instead, I increased my fat intake. I eat lots of foods rich in omega-3s, such as salmon, avocados, and walnuts. I add lots of probiotics, like kefir and Greek yogurt. I have a fair portion of vegetables at every meal.

And, then, sometimes, I have a cheat day where I eat pizza and a chocolate snack for dinner. A healthy diet is about moderation, not deficiency.

What Your Breakouts Are Telling You About Your Health—and How To Fix I

Personally, I found it to have the biggest impact on my hormonal acne. It’s easy to eat a balanced meal at home, but I always cheat when I travel.

I don’t feel guilty about it. In the grand scheme of things, eating too much sugar for a week every few months won’t kill me. However, I find that during this month the acne comes back more easily.

Now you know my secret to prevent hormonal acne. But what if you’ve already dealt with it? Here are some tips to help you:

Let me just say that your pores are all closed now. Salicylic acid gets rid of all the gunk inside them, making the blemishes disappear.

It works well on both blackheads and whiteheads. The ones that clog your entire pores. If you just remove the top, it’s only a matter of time before they rear their ugly heads.

If you’re dealing with acne, there are a few things that can help. They all have one thing in common: they are extremely cruel. Use it only on pimples!

Change your diet and skin care routine a week before your period and you’ll never have to deal with hormonal acne again!
