As discussed below, the type of detergent you use can also cause mold and mildew.

Aside from that disclaimer, cleaning a dirty/moldy front load washer is actually quite easy although mold can be stubborn. On my first try, I just used a normal cleanser. No matter how hard I scrubbed, the print just wouldn’t go away. I swear I could have grabbed a knife to scrape it off, and I had to peel the rubber off to get the mold off. But….I found a method that works! I already knew that bleach would be needed. But “clean and fragrant” showed me the idea of towels.

Note that it’s not easy….it doesn’t take much effort. The key to getting rid of that nasty mold is soaking. And how do you soak a washing machine, you may ask? Isn’t it always wet?

1. We’ll start with bleach. Pour equal amounts of bleach and warm water into a 5 gallon bucket. (You may want to wear gloves). Use a small white cloth and rub

2. Next, soak a large white bath towel in the bucket. Take it out, and squeeze a little. By length – place half of the towel under the gasket seal, and hang the other half out.

I have to appreciate the towel idea for the “clean and smelling” bloggers. She does the whole process a little differently, but please stop by, say “hi” and tell her I sent you! I’m not going to think about it. I’ve thought about soaking the area for 30 minutes to an hour, but have some blanks on how to do it (other than soaking a paper towel and then sticking it on… hate it, but can work).

By length – place half of the towel under the gasket seal, and hang the other half out.

3. Close 30 minutes. Take it out and quickly scrub again. The situation should be much better. If necessary, soak the bath towel again, put it back in the gasket (and outside) and let it rest for another 30 minutes. As bad as I let it get, I had to let it sink twice. Another quick rub.

4. This is my personal trick and it works great! Put all the towels you use in the washing machine. Dump the leftover bleach and water from the bucket into the washing machine (the part where you put your clothes!) Run a full cycle on the hottest setting. All that bleach and hot water will wash away any last bit of “mold” as well as remove some hard to reach places. As you can see, a slight discoloration of the gasket may be permanent. But trust me, it’s really clean.

5. After the cycle is complete, remove the towel. Stir a little. Put the towel back in, pour 3 cups of vinegar into the washer, and run another cycle on the hottest setting. Done!
