How To Remove Search Bar From Chrome – I noticed something interesting this morning in Chrome Canary (Chrome Canary is the latest version of the Google Chrome browser for early adopters to test) – when you do a search using the browser’s omni address bar, you get to the default level. is Google’s search results page.
, the search bar at the top of Google’s results page for what seems like forever, has disappeared.

In the image above, Google Canary uses a dark blue theme. Apparently, Google’s designers believe that if you’re smart enough to search by URL (instead of going to Google.com to do your search), you will.
Google Chrome Is Planning To Remove Status Bar From Progressive Web Apps / Digital Information World
A small gray sub-navigation box (“Shopping Web Image Maps, etc”) has been removed from the top of the results page. Removing the search bar (and button) adds a good 30 pixels to many real estate search results. This is what 30 pixels looks like in a 500 pixel high browser window:
(note: the top navigation with black bar has also been removed from Chrome Canary, although I’m not sure if that’s the result of another UX decision. It also frees up more screen space)
It’s a reasonable design choice; For all I know, this change could have been implemented a year ago and I might not have noticed. The search bar as part of the browser app is a design style that has only become more ingrained in how search is done in native apps (Google and any other full-text service), where search is contained in a fixed widget or special button. Maybe this will increase the cost of clicking on Google search results that aren’t in the top two returned, now there’s some prosperity? It may seem like a blow, but the blows are important: Google’s and Amazon’s tests have shown that an unacceptable delay will have a negative effect on user engagement: in the case of Amazon, every 100 miles reduces the sales of the paid page by up to 1%.
Update: We just noticed that Google OS (unofficial blog) covered this issue last week. In his March 16 post, Alex Chitu has these complaints:
Google Search Bar Widget Missing? How To Restore It On Android
Closely integrating Chrome and Google Search breaks a lot of things. For example, you cannot change the URL to adjust some parameters, the “I feel happy” feature is no longer available, and the address bar does not include visual spell check, improved suggestions and probably other features.
1. I bet Google’s A/B tests show that a very negligible portion of their user base tries to adjust URL parameters manually. Hell, I don’t even do that and I’m a developer. When you teach data journalists how to manage government websites with parameters (which are much easier than Google), I think many of them are surprised that you can even do it. I guess it’s the same for most Google users in general.
2. Spelling is not required for Google search. Google devotes a large amount of resources and academic talent to finding early user bugs. In fact, Google probably wants to train users *not* to spell their queries, because it reduces search time (from the user’s point of view). Google better get back to the user, I think.
3. “I feel lucky” is more or less unnecessary as Google has refined its search experience. And it doesn’t seem like a very used feature anyway, even though it’s cool.

However, the main picture is that the nice appearance of the third or fourth search result is likely to be something that benefits all Google search users in terms of the above features.

, a column dedicated to helping you get the most out of the hardware and software you already use.
Google Search, the feature you probably use every time you type in your browser’s search bar, is the most popular search engine on the planet. Millions upon millions of people use it for anything and everything, from researching school projects to buying the latest gaming consoles, looking for cool new recipes to finding that movie you can’t remember the name of. The problem is that when we type quickly, we all fall victim to typos sometimes. And because Google remembers, it will automatically fill in the error over and over again.
Fortunately, Google is smart enough to remember, and can be trained to forget. If you’re using Google Search in Chrome, or another browser like Safari or Firefox, here’s how to clean up the errors and also eliminate its autocomplete feature entirely.
