The scenario is simple: you share a file on Dropbox and send a link to a group of people. You’ll now need to replace the file with the new version, but you’ll want to make sure the Dropbox link URL stays the same to avoid confusing your contributors. There are two possible cases:
This is a trick to replace files without changing the link. Load the Dropbox website in your browser, navigate to the folder containing the file you want to replace, and drag it into the browser window to replace it. (Obviously, the file names must be the same.) When you do this, Dropbox replaces the old file with the new one, but doesn’t change the URL of the underlying Dropbox link.
In case you’re wondering, navigating to a folder in the new Dropbox desktop app and dragging a new file into the app window displays an error message.
(What, you didn’t notice that Dropbox now has its own dedicated Mac app with a file browser-like interface? You can open it from your Applications folder or by clicking the folder icon in the app from the dropbox menu bar. If I don’t “Don’t know” I can’t see the app in the app folder, the version of Dropbox may be out of date, I claim its latest version is 87.3.127 . Anyway, I haven’t worked with my Dropbox desktop app yet.)

For many Dropbox for Business users, collaboration starts with shared folders. It’s a great way to keep team members in sync and allows everyone to work on the same files without having to email attachments.
Advanced Dropbox Features That You Should Start Using
However, as your project team grows or changes, it can be difficult to keep track of everyone who joins your shared folders and whether they have view-only or edit permissions. Typically, you go to the sharing page on the Dropbox website, find the shared folder you want to learn more about, and click the option to find out who has access to it. But now there’s an easier way to get all that information: with fewer clicks.
Starting this week, when you’re in a shared folder on the Dropbox website, you’ll automatically see a banner at the top of the page that shows the profile pictures of the members of that shared folder. (If someone hasn’t uploaded a profile picture, you’ll see their initials.) Also, the banner shows all the groups you’ve invited to the folder. What if you want to know if someone can view or edit a file? Just hover over their profile picture and the information will appear.
The banner also tells you how many people belong to the shared folder, including those outside your organization. If you notice someone is missing, click the “Add Member” button to invite more people. If someone should have view permissions instead of edit permissions, you can easily update their permissions by clicking the “Settings” button. Remember that in both cases you must be the owner of the shared folder or have permissions to manage folder membership.
So the next time you wonder who has access to your shared folders, you don’t have to look for this information. Just go to the Dropbox website and it’s front and center.
