Some counterfeiters even now make a mold from a real piece of moldavite and reproduce the color and texture almost to perfection. The best way to achieve this is to notice that the stone is perfect and the asking price, which is usually very low.

If the moldavite you are testing is bright green in color, you are most likely looking at fake moldavite made by fusing green glass bottles. Also note that the larger the moldavite, the higher the price, as most genuine moldavite is sold by the gram.

If the seller claims that the stone was mined somewhere other than the Vltava River Valley in the Czech Republic, it is definitely fake.

If the moldavite looks really wet or shiny, like molten glass, you’re likely looking at fake moldavite. Now, some sellers state up front that their moldavite is lab-created, engineered, or synthetic, which is simply green glass made and shaped to look like moldavite.

Guide To Genuine And Fake Moldavite

Just be aware that if it says lab-made, engineered, or synthetic, you’re getting green glass, or possibly worse. Some fake moldavites on the market aren’t even green, which is a sure sign that it’s definitely fake. I’ll include some pictures of real and fake moldavite below so you can see the difference for yourself. Over the years, especially recently (with social media and Tik Tok), Moldovan has become increasingly rare. Most sellers find it very difficult to get Moldovan. We never know when it will be the last time we get to hold one, so I recommend grabbing one while we have it.

Note: Most stones will have “flaws” such as splits and pits, which are normal and natural characteristics of moldavite.

India is also trying to make chips but they can’t replicate the texture etc. BUY ONLY FROM TRUSTED SOURCES. Here is an amazing photo of a REAL Moldavite gemstone that is heavily embedded. You can see inclusions of lechtatelierite and bubbles. It is ONLY seen in gemstones or polished moldavite stones, not in rough form.

The bubbles can be of any shape and size (they are only visible inside the stone, smooth or polished. The bubbles are not on the surface), the surface is textured, pitted and eroded for about 14.5 million years. It varies from piece to piece.

The sheer volume of fakes on ebay and other marketplaces in China/Hong Kong, India and Thailand was a big factor in why IVC stopped selling there as they do nothing to block these fraudulent sellers. A new fake moldavite is coming to the market from China and India, more shapes – probably from Molds. You should notice the wet/shiny appearance of the molten glass. They’re changing it up with some newer molds using new techniques to get that “rough” look. It’s easy to tell the difference if you know what you’re looking for.
