Launched in 2016, Instagram Stories has become a staple of the social media app. Instead of posting carefully selected images that stay in your feed forever (unless you delete them), stories disappear into slideshows and the end of the day.

You can add pictures, videos, text or articles from other accounts to your story. Stories don’t appear on your main image grid, so they’re great for photos or posts you want to share with your followers without having to create a full caption.

Stories are another way to see the latest happenings of the people you follow (although you can now reset the timeline). Stories positioned horizontally above your feed: If someone you Follow has posted a Story in the last 24 hours, their profile picture will appear in a colored circle around it. Click on the image and you will see the history of that account. Tap Continue to see all the daily posts from the accounts you follow.

Moving between stories is easy. When viewing your friends’ stories, swipe right to go previous, swipe right to go next, and tap to skip the current photo or video. If you want to linger on one image, you can pause the story by tapping and tapping the screen. Raise your finger to restart the story. Also works with video. You can react to a story by swiping up or simply tap the heart in the lower right corner to Like.

The library of animated images provided by Giphy opens. When you find the sticker you want, add it like any other sticker. Search for “effects” and you’ll get sparkles, hearts, and other fun additions to your theme.

Once you’ve added the stickers, go crazy with a quick text. To add text, tap the text icon in the upper right corner of the screen, then tap the color you want. If the color just doesn’t match, don’t despair. Swipe left on the color palette to see more options, or click the eyedropper icon to select a color from the image.
