Despite being run by a company not known for its data security, Messenger’s “secret chat” feature is a legitimate way to chat with friends and colleagues. Private conversations are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning that no one outside the chat can read what’s inside.

If you care about privacy and want to use Messenger, Secret Chat should be your go-to tool. Here’s how to set up a secret chat and customize its settings.

Secret chats are exclusive to the iPhone, iPad and Android Messenger app. You won’t find them on the Messenger desktop app or on the website.

If you are Facebook friends with the person on the other end of the chat, you can also enable missing messages. These allow you to set a timer for each message you send, so they are deleted after a while.

1. At the top of the secret conversation, tap the other person’s name (iPhone or iPad) or the “i” icon (Android) to open a menu of options.

In addition, you can report the person you are chatting with, block them, or simply delete the chat. To do so, open the options menu again and tap Something wrong, Block or Delete Chat respectively.

Last year, many Facebook users were surprised to learn about the “Others” inbox, a place to dump private messages from people you don’t know or aren’t friends with. Big problem: You never received a notification when one of these messages arrived.

Ways To Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages

Later in the year, the service phased out the other in favor of something called Messaging Applications, but it was largely aimed at users of the Facebook Messenger app. At least it showed notifications when new requests come in.

But, look, Facebook still has a hold on you. There is also another inbox of sorts that is more closed than the first. And it can contain all kinds of important messages (or it can be all spam). Here’s how to watch on the desktop version; Mobile instructions follow below.
