I Am So Exhausted All The Time – Welcome to the Sleep Diary, where we understand one of the most important (and elusive) factors in everyday life: sleep. To help us learn more about it, we invited women to track their sleep time over five days – and submitted those diaries to sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan for analysis.

In this week’s sleep diary, a 31-year-old teacher explained that they were in a cycle of fatigue.

My alarm goes off at 5am. Then he dozed until 5:09am, then 5:18am, and then I finally got up at 5:27am. I shower at 5:45am and catch the train at 6:20am.

The school provided us with a hot lunch today: chicken, potatoes and a variety of raw and cooked vegetables. That’s enough to keep me going until 4:45pm to finish work.

I took the train home (which is normal), but I managed to stay awake so I didn’t miss my stop. I walked in the front door at 6pm, made myself a vegetarian pie with potato wedges and greens, and called my parents weekly to chat.

The day ended with mint tea and a pint of water, which I drank while watching TV and chatting with my boyfriend. At 9 pm I was lying in bed with a book and an hour later I was ready to turn off the lights. I fell asleep in less than 30 minutes.

My alarm went off at 5am and I dozed off a few times before finally waking up at 5:30am. It’s the same as the day before (5:45 am shower, 6:20 vacation, 7:30 work), but this time I’m more lethargic.

Again, I eat cereal and black coffee as soon as I go to work. And, around lunch time, I had a second cup of black coffee because I felt too tired.

Unsurprisingly, I had a headache in the afternoon (probably from dehydration), so I finished work at 4:45 pm and ended up with a headache and nausea. When I get home, I’ll take painkillers and lie down before starting my virtual Spanish class at 6:30pm.

I made sure to drink two pints of water during the two hour session, and when I was done, I felt much better (although I was very exhausted). Before I went to bed at 9:30pm, I ate a plate of gnocchi and veggies in tomato sauce, watching TV while I slept. Again, I fell asleep within 30 minutes.

When my alarm went off at 5am in the morning, I would wake up a few times before waking up (it’s a habit). I had a headache the day before and was exhausted.

It was the same morning routine again, but this time I turned off the coffee and drank water. So I managed to drink 1 liter of water during the working day, which is much more than usual.
