N erina Ramlakhan remembers when her daughter was little and how she would get so tired that she couldn’t walk. “There was a healthy level of exhaustion,” he said. “But if it goes beyond that, it will run on some kind of fake energy. And then it won’t be able to leave when you sleep.”

It’s certainly ironic that in our sophisticated, high-tech, busy world we seem to revert to behaviors we know and deal with as children, but can’t deal with as adults. Excessive fatigue, according to sleep experts, depends on our constant presence. In the past, says Ramlakhan, author of The Little Book of Sleep, our days had natural rest periods that gave us brief respite. Today it is gone for many of us. “We’ve become restless as a society, and it demands more of us when we sleep at night,” he said. “We have lost the rituals and practices that gave us some rest during the day. You used to go to the supermarket and while you were waiting in line, you were daydreaming, a little bored, looking around. You may think you’re using your time well, but that’s not how your brain interprets it. There is a complex neurophysiology that requires a break from work and concentration; if it is constantly bombarded, the brain becomes overloaded. The result, Ramlakhan says, is going into what’s called survival mode: thinking something bad is going to happen, getting your adrenaline pumping and reaching for sugary dry food for a quick energy boost.

And even more: if your brain is so focused on what to do next that you don’t even take a moment to stop and rest, it will gradually become difficult to get out of the night. It is as if we have lost the ability to forgive; and the greatest release of all is sleep, which Ramlakhan describes as trust. “There’s a growing tendency to hold on, to carry on, and it’s also reflected in our sleep patterns. People tell me they feel like they’re about to fall asleep all night. They wake up in the morning tired . They say they wake up at night and can’t sleep. But waking up at night is normal; we usually go back to sleep.”

So, they decided to spend another hour looking at the first one in the box; and then the second; and before turning off the lights, they reach for their phones again for quick message and news updates.

It’s no wonder it’s all gone pear-shaped to sleep: what we do, says consultant psychologist Dr Anna Symonds, who works in Nottinghamshire, inverts Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In 1943, American psychologists placed physiological requirements, such as sleep, food, water, and shelter, at the bottom of their pyramid; Exercise, such as the pursuit of happiness, the pursuit of purpose, the use of our talents, is supreme. Now, we are inverting the triangle: we prioritize the top element and remove the bottom element. Since it was more difficult to run out of food, water and shelter, we decided that sleep was expendable.

But it’s not, and being too tired is one of the signs that we’re doing it wrong. Unfortunately, another symptom of a society-wide problem, says Ramlakhan, is society’s tendency to sleep. “We sleep better than before; we know more than ever; we have better duvets, better pillows,” he said. Therefore, it is not the mechanics of sleep that fail us; our inability to schedule our days and the realization that some of our nocturnal activities actually take place during the day, and especially at night.

How to get rid of excessive fatigue? Symonds says we need to look at how we treat children’s health conditions and apply the same wisdom to our own lives. “We know we should limit our kids’ screen time, but we’re not so good with ourselves,” she said. Veer recommends sleep hygiene techniques, especially coffee breaks in the second half of the day and clearing the air, like children do. Ramlakhan says we should also drink more water, go to bed early at least three nights a week (preferably 9:30 p.m.), and most importantly, cultivate a healthier relationship with our technology.

After all, we are small children in a digital world; like little kids who don’t know when they’ve had enough chocolate.
