You’ve no doubt heard the warning over the years: protecting your home network with strong Wi-Fi security and passwords is key.

Without proper security, neighbors and other strangers can not only steal your Wi-Fi, the services you pay for, but also free installers can access shared folders and other resources on your network.

If you’re concerned that someone is stealing your Wi-Fi, there are a few tools you can use to find out.

Your Attention Didn’t Collapse. It Was Stolen

The easiest way to see if an unauthorized person is using your Wi-Fi is to look at your router – but this only works if you can take all your wireless devices completely offline. . If you have many devices (like smart home gadgets) that use Wi-Fi, don’t bother with this method and go straight ahead.

But if you can count all the devices on your Wi-Fi network on one hand, keep them offline—turn them off or set them to airplane mode. Then check the status lights on your Wi-Fi router. If there are no devices that use Wi-Fi, the lights should not flicker or flash. If they are, someone else is probably connecting to your network.

There are many apps in the App Store for your mobile device that promise to scan your network and provide a list of all connected devices. You can search the App Store for options, but a reliable app for both iOS and Android is called Wi-Fi Guard. This app gives you a list of all connected devices, which you can scan to see if there are any devices you don’t know about.

How To Know (and Check) If Your Identity Has Been Stolen

Many devices are known by simple names, such as your laptop, phone, and some smart home appliances. But some are reported as “unknown device”, which is relatively useless when trying to figure out which ones are yours and which ones are compatible with each other.

If you have a relatively modern Wi-Fi router, it probably works with a mobile app—in fact, you may have actually set up the router using the app. If this is the case, you can launch the app on your phone and search the network map, log or client list.

Every router is different and there is no standard between router software, so you will need to search. But if you can find this list, it’s basically the “official” version of the device list from a third-party Wi-Fi detector app. If you have a multi-band router, the app may show which radio (such as 2.4GHz or 5GHz) each device is connected to.

If none of these options work, your last (and often more complicated) option is to log into your router’s administrative control panel in a web browser. To do this, you need to know the following:

After your administrator logs into the control panel, view a network map, user log, or client list. As we mentioned before, every router is different and there is no standard method among router software, so you need to browse to find it.

If you find unauthorized devices on your home network, there are two easy ways to remove them:
