The Biewer Terrier, pronounced “Beaver Terrier”, has an interesting history. They originated in Germany when Gertrud and Warner Biewer bred two Yorkshire Terriers with piebald genes to create them.
After 20 years of a successful Yorkshire Terrier breeding program, they came across two dogs with the rare piebald gene, which is not normally found in Yorkies. These two black, white and tan Yorkies were bred to create the first Biewer Terrier. From there, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier was born and became popular in the late 1980s in Germany.
After some time, the breed became known as the Biewer Terrier. Although their popularity in Germany declined in the year 2000, this dog breed returned to popularity when it was brought to the United States.
