2. Fruits – Fruits are another great source of natural carbohydrates. Most fruits are loaded with enzymes that help break down nutrients and deliver them more efficiently to tired muscles. Pineapple is a great option as it is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties!
3. Sandwich Wraps – Turkey and chicken are an excellent source of lean protein; Make sure you reach for whole grain tortillas. Bonus wraps and sandwiches are also removable! Perfect for that lunch break workout!
4. Chocolate milk – my personal favorite! Packed with protein and carbohydrates, but in liquid form! Perfect for replenishing lost fluids such as sweat, as well as calcium and sodium. Just make sure you find something low in fat!

“One idea I try to get athletes to understand is that the benefits of exercise don’t happen until after the exercise is over, and your body is recovering and trying to get stronger or faster,” says John M. Martinez, MD. A sports medicine physician who has worked with the USA Triathlon team.

Martinez recommends that people — especially those who train at high levels — eat a protein- and carbohydrate-rich meal within an hour of finishing their workout.
Ideally, these carbs and protein should come from whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and lean meats, but protein supplements or shakes can work in a pinch. Protein will help repair and build muscle, while carbohydrates will stabilize blood sugar and prevent the body from breaking down muscle.
Fish is an excellent source of lean protein that can help rebuild your muscles after an intense workout. Sushi, in particular, has a good balance of protein from the fish and carbohydrates from the rice. Yelp/Alex B.

What Not To Eat After A Workout For Weight Loss
Lean protein—which includes boneless, skinless fish, beans, and duck—lets you get all the health and muscle-recovery benefits of protein, with fewer calories and less saturated fat than proteins like beef or pork.
“Fish and chicken contain all the essential proteins — leucine, isoleucine and valine — and promote muscle repair and muscle growth,” says Martinez.
Tip: Preparing protein ahead of time can make it easier to fuel after exercise. Steamed or baked fish, or grilled poultry, can easily be prepared the night before and eaten immediately after a workout.
“If you like whole grains, quinoa is probably your best bet,” says Stacy Stephenson, DC, functional medicine expert and founder of VibrantDoc, a wellness platform.
