Best Products For Pimples 2020

Most of us have encountered acne at some point in our lives. Whether it’s in teenage years, adulthood or beyond – time doesn’t improve things. Nasty red bumps, painful cysts, scars and tenderness are no fun and can really slow down your day or lower your overall confidence.

Because acne is so common, there’s a lot of information out there about why it happens, how to treat it, and what products you should use. To cut through the noise and figure this out, I asked Dr. Board-certified dermatologist Caren Campbell explains why acne occurs and what you can do about it. Read on to learn more about the causes of acne and what you can do to treat and prevent it.

Acne is a skin condition in which whiteheads, blackheads, pimples or cysts form on the skin. It usually occurs on the face, but it can also occur on other parts of the body, such as the back or chest.

While acne can be caused by a variety of factors, the most common cause is hormones. “The driving force behind most acne is the male hormone (aka testosterone), which promotes oil production. This is why acne starts during puberty and puberty. The increased oiliness of the skin creates a hospitable environment for acne-causing bacteria to multiply ,” Campbell said.

Another contributing factor to acne is clogged pores. “Dead skin cells can also clog pores, and other skincare products we put on our skin can cause comedone (clogged pores) and then the pores can release oil, dead skin cells, product, and acne bacteria. Like this one that collects skin cells, oil and bacteria and send inflammatory cells (white blood cells) to the site, causing painful, pus-filled lesions—cystic acne,” Campbell says.

Following a basic skincare routine can help prevent acne, but because acne is a multifaceted problem, skin care alone is often not enough to solve the problem — especially in severe cases. If your acne is difficult to treat or recurs, it may be worth thinking about your diet.

Processed, fried, and sugary foods can contribute to the underlying inflammation that triggers acne. Research has linked diets with a high glycemic load, or those high in starch and sugar, to acne. Research on the relationship between dairy consumption and acne suggests that dairy is a potential cause. But as this study points out, the research couldn’t distinguish whether it was caused by the milk itself or the hormones in it.

The best way to find out if it’s a food is to work with a registered dietitian or nutritionist who can help you pick out foods that might be the culprit or help you on an elimination diet.

Treatment for acne will vary depending on the severity and cause. One way to treat acne is topical treatments, which you can buy over-the-counter or through a dermatologist. Look for products that contain benzoyl peroxide, as it can help the skin topically.

“Benzoyl peroxide helps kill acne-causing bacteria and unclogs pores. Differin has created a topical retinoid and benzoyl peroxide wash, which is a great place to start treating acne,” says Campbell.

Another topical chemical that can help is a retinoid, or vitamin A. “Acne treatments aim to address the root cause, and retinoids are most effective at addressing most underlying causes other than the hormonal component. Retinoids remove dead skin cells from the surface, dry out the sebum, and kill the acne-causing bacteria. Bacteria and anti-inflammatory drugs,” Campbell said.

However, if the real cause is hormone- or diet-related, topical treatments may not help. If you suspect hormones are to blame, your dermatologist may recommend a specific type of birth control to reduce the hormones that may be causing your acne. You can also look into natural ways to balance your hormones, such as diet, getting enough sleep, exercise, and other lifestyle changes that a professional like a nutritionist or health coach can help you with.

“Hormonal issues can be addressed with birth control pills because they bind free testosterone in the blood and reduce the hormone that causes oil production, or other medications like spironolactone may help,” says Campbell. Spironolactone, a diuretic, is also thought to lower testosterone levels and help treat acne in women.

According to Campbell, drinking three cups of peppermint tea a day is known to have anti-androgenic effects, and it’s a simple, natural remedy you can try — but you should always consult your doctor before starting a new treatment .

Eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, and exercising are all great ways to treat acne and improve your skin. Since acne is associated with inflammation and hormones, taking a systemic approach can be more helpful than focusing on a specific skin care product that can only do so much.

That means maintaining a good skin care regimen is recommended by dermatologists. You don’t need to buy expensive products for this either. A simple cleanser, moisturizer, and targeted serum (such as one with acne-fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) can go a long way. Don’t forget to wash your face, especially before bed, to prevent clogged pores and oil buildup.

Be sure to remove your makeup and cleanse yourself after going to the gym. Sweating up at the gym and leaving without a cleanse (even if it’s just for an hour) is a recipe for fast-clogging pores. You don’t want all that dirt, bacteria, sweat and oil to sit on your skin for too long.
