What Can You Do To Stop Coughing So Much – Whether you’re drinking tea or chopping onions, home remedies can help keep your cough under control.
Believe it or not, coughing is a good thing. According to the Mayo Clinic, this is your body’s way of clearing your airways in response to an irritant. But a cough can keep you up all night and make you miserable – and sometimes it feels like it won’t go away.
What Can You Do To Stop Coughing So Much
If you’re struggling with how to get rid of a cough, here’s the good news: Chronic coughs go away on their own without treatment. Currently, there are many natural cough remedies that have benefits, says Stephen Russell, MD, MD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a specialist in upper respiratory diseases.
Smoker’s Cough: Symptoms And How To Get Rid Of Smoker’s Cough
Here are Russell’s tips on how to stop a cough and some of his favorite home remedies for coughs, many of which you probably already have in your kitchen or medicine cabinet.
If you taste honey, you are lucky. Dr. “Hot drinks with honey can be soothing and treat coughs,” says Russell. Use hot water or your favorite tea and add honey and lemon to taste (lemon is just to taste).
A spoonful of honey is another inexpensive home cough remedy with proven benefits. In a study published in the Journal of Pediatric Clinics of North America, children 2 years of age or older who have a cough due to upper respiratory infections were given 2 tablespoons of honey at bedtime. Honey not only reduce coughing at night, but also better sleep. Another study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that honey had little benefit in reducing nighttime coughs in children between the ages of 2-18. But don’t give honey to children under 1, Russell says, because it can sometimes cause botulism in babies.
Lozenges and hard candies help stimulate saliva, or increase saliva flow, which can ease any cough you may have, Russell explains. It works especially well as a dry cough remedy, he said. There isn’t much scientific evidence to support herbal remedies like zinc, vitamin C, and echinacea, Russell said, but they may have a small benefit — even a placebo effect — and nothing harmful.
Cough Etiquette: Why It’s So Important
Another good way to get rid of a cough is to drink plenty of fluids, especially hot water, chicken soup, and tea, Russell said. “Many people with a cough are dehydrated,” he explains. In addition to hydration, fluids help your immune system fight the source of the virus or virus that may be causing your cough and reduce the sore throat that accompanies a cough.
Do you have salt at home? Go ahead and add warm water and rinse. In a small study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine , shaking with plain water weakened the symptoms of upper respiratory infections (such as the flu) and prevented the disease from starting. In a pilot study published in January 2019 in Scientific Reports, hot salt water immersion (along with nasal irrigation) also showed some benefits in controlling cold symptoms and shortening the duration of symptoms such as coughing.
If you’ve ever noticed that your cough or congestion subsides after a hot bath or shower, you know how important moisture is to keep a cold at bay. You can prepare a simple remedy for this cough at home by taking a hot bath or using a cold compress. Deodorants add moisture to the air, and decongestants can help relieve coughs and congestion from the common cold, according to the Mayo Clinic. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your humidifier and avoiding bacteria and mold contributors.
Many people start crying when they start cutting onions. But while there’s no science behind it, some people swear that the steam that comes off when they cut an onion helps clear up a cough, says Russell. Before going to bed, peel an onion and put it on the table next to your bed or on a plate under the bed. Although using onions may sound like an old women’s story, Russell said it is very popular in Spain and France.
What Is A ‘persistent Cough’ And What Should I Do If I Have It?
If you’ve tried other cough remedies and are considering adding cough and cold remedies to your medicine cabinet, read the label first. “Studies have shown that those with dextromethorphan may be slightly better than placebo in helping to reduce cough,” says Russell. Products containing pseudoephedrine can prevent postnasal drip from viruses or allergies and reduce coughing, he said. But the drug has limitations: dextromethorphan is not safe for children under 5, says Russell, and pseudoephedrine increases blood pressure and heart rate.
As for nighttime cough medicines, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine), they often contain an antihistamine to help you sleep, and to help you stop coughing. Benadryl may have side effects in people over the age of 65, such as decreased appetite in the middle of the night. Russell advises trying natural remedies before turning to cough medicine and taking precautions.
