What Causes Dizzy Spells When You Stand Up – Some people feel dizzy more than others, but it can happen to anyone – and it may be worth checking with your doctor.
If you’ve ever felt dizzy when you stand up too quickly, you might be wondering what’s going on.
What Causes Dizzy Spells When You Stand Up
Depending on the cause, this may not be a long-term problem. But if you feel weak or really pass out, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
Why Am I Dizzy When I Wake Up?
Leah F., a registered nurse at ConvenientCare in Wilkes-Barre. “The feeling that you’re about to pass out is called ‘presyncope,'” says Crispell. It occurs when the brain does not receive enough blood, oxygen, or glucose to function properly, even momentarily.
People who experience presyncope usually ignore it and go about their day. This is not a good idea because some causes can be serious. Crispel says it’s always best to get checked out by a doctor. Especially since dizziness can be a symptom of an underlying disease.
Also called postural hypotension, this is the lightheadedness you sometimes feel when you stand up. It can happen to anyone—and it happens more often if you take certain medications and get older.
This condition (also known as an abnormal heart beat) occurs when your heart beats too fast, too slowly, or in a way that causes a sudden reduction in blood flow to the brain. Any of these can make you feel weak.
Dizziness And Vertigo: Know The Difference
Prescription drugs for pain, heart disease, and high blood pressure can affect your circulatory system and make you feel dizzy. If it’s too much, talk to your doctor about adjusting your dose.
Not drinking enough fluids can cause nausea, weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure and fainting. The good news: rehydration will quickly relieve your symptoms.
Anemia is a lack of healthy red blood cells, or hemoglobin, in your blood, which carries oxygen to your organs – including your brain. Anemia is characterized by fatigue, but it can also make you feel weak and dizzy.
This neurological disease disrupts the electrical signals between the brain and the heart, blood vessels and sweat glands. Fainting comes from its effect on your heart rate and blood pressure.
Reasons Why You Might Get Dizzy Spells
Have you ever had an anxiety attack? You may breathe faster and more deeply, which can cause light-headedness and dizziness.
When you feel this light, lie down or sit with your head between your knees.
“If you’re feeling down, the most important thing is to get to a safe place,” Crispell says. By doing this, you will avoid injury from a fall or a blow to your head if you lose consciousness.
After the fainting spell has passed, contact your doctor as soon as possible for an examination. A trained medical professional can determine the exact cause of your presyncope. A short period of dizziness when standing is often a sign of primary orthostatic hypotension (IOH), a blood pressure condition that affects up to 70% of people. For most people, the feeling of dizziness is accompanied by blurred vision or lightheadedness that goes away after about a minute. However, about 7% of people with IOD often lose consciousness when they stand up too quickly.
Head Injury And Dizziness
This disorder does not cause long-term damage, but it has a negative impact on a person’s quality of life. A general recommendation for managing symptoms is to “stand up more slowly.” However, a new study suggests two inexpensive, drug-free techniques for reducing IOH symptoms: elevating the knee before standing or stretching the leg after standing.
When a person is lying down, their blood pressure is uniform throughout the body. However, as a person stands, gravity pulls the blood downward, causing more pressure in the legs and less pressure in the head. This is bad news for the oxygen-starved brain. Low blood pressure means less blood and less blood means less oxygen. If the low pressure does not correct within a few seconds, the person will experience dizziness. If this continues for a long time, they will pass out due to lack of oxygen.
As soon as the brain detects a drop in blood pressure, it manipulates the cardiovascular system and the heart starts pumping faster. This helps in getting more blood to the brain
Blood is available. Calf muscles are large and make up about 60% of a person’s muscle mass. This means they can hold a lot of blood. If there is more blood in the legs, there is less blood for the brain. To ensure that blood is available, the blood vessels in the legs constrict, preventing blood from moving quickly to the leg muscles. If all goes well, the blood pressure will return to normal within seconds and the person will have no symptoms. Unfortunately, things don’t always go well for people with IOH.
What Causes Dizzy Spells?
When a person with IOH stands, the blood pressure in the head decreases and the heart rate increases, but the blood vessels in the legs do not constrict as quickly. As a result, the legs fill with blood and the blood pressure in the head drops even more. It may take up to a minute for the body to return blood pressure to normal. In the meantime, the brain does not receive the oxygen it needs and the person feels dizzy and lightheaded.
Dizziness after standing was significantly reduced when participants raised their knees for 30 seconds before standing or crossed their legs and stretched their legs for 30 seconds after standing. (Credit: N. Sheikh, et al., Heart Rhythm, 2022.)
Researchers at the University of Calgary sought to determine whether muscle activity could help prevent severe drops in blood pressure. For this purpose, 22 young women with a history of fainting after standing were asked to test two techniques. The first technique, called PREACT, increased the heart rate
. Participants raised their knees while pedaling for 30 seconds. The second strategy, called TENSE, creates pressure in the lower body by squeezing the leg muscles

Both PREACT and TENSE procedures significantly reduced the post-standing blood pressure reduction compared to the control group (-21 mmHg vs -28 mmHg vs -18 mmHg, respectively). Additionally, participants reported fewer symptoms when standing.
First author Nasia A: “Our study provides a new, cost-free symptom management technique that patients with IOH can use to manage their symptoms.” Sheikh noted. “Because it’s a physical maneuver, it only requires the lower body parts, which patients can use to combat their symptoms anytime, anywhere.”
The authors plan to test these techniques on a larger population, especially older adults who are more likely to develop IOH.

Where the prime meridian meets the equator, a non-existent island captures our imagination and our non-geocoded data. This happens every time you get up from the table or out of bed. You suddenly get up and feel uncomfortable. In some cases, your vision will blur, or you will have to hold yourself until you feel dizzy – which is always within seconds.
Specialists have a name for this temporary condition: primary orthostatic hypotension (OH). If you experience this from time to time—and research shows that most people do—rest assured that, for the most part, it’s harmless.
“These symptoms occur because the amount of blood – and therefore oxygen – to the brain is reduced.” says MA Akram, OH researcher and head of epidemiology at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
It may help to think of your body and the blood it circulates as a half-full bottle of water. When the water bottle is lying on its side, the liquid inside will spread evenly. But turn the water bottle upside down and all the liquid slides down. Whenever you get up, something like this happens. “Gravity pulls a lot of blood toward your legs and lower body, forcing your heart and arteries to work harder to deliver the volume you need to your brain,” Ekram explains.
