Frequent urination may be common when you start to hydrate while your body is still adjusting, but you can expect this to improve over time as your body starts to produce more ADH (antidiuretic hormone). ADH is the hormone our body produces to help us know when we need to go to the bathroom, as well as to hold it in throughout the night. Children and the elderly produce less, which can lead to enuresis and incontinence. So, first of all, you need to know that while it’s normal to pee more often when you start drinking more fluids, your body naturally balances them out over time. Just be patient.

When Anxiety Leads To Urinary Problems

If you’ve ever had to kill a houseplant, you’ll understand. If the soil and roots dry out and you pour a lot of water on it, it tends to drain to the other side. It takes a gentle, consistent process that absorbs and uses water to restore the soil and roots to a healthy state. In the beginning, you will be a dry plant, with water tending to pass rather quickly, but by constantly hydrating, your body will learn to absorb that hydration more deeply and retain it for longer. Our bodies are smart.

It’s also important to know that a healthy, hydrated person should urinate at least every 2-3 hours, and you should have a strong, steady flow for 15-25 seconds. This is actually one of the best ways to tell if you’re properly hydrated (more accurate than looking at the color of your urine or doing a skin turgor test). Hydration can also mean better elimination of solid waste, so don’t be surprised if you also notice changes in frequency or volume when it comes to bowel movements.

Being wet means more bathroom breaks. But try to look on the bright side, every trip to the bathroom is also a way to make sure you’re getting up and moving regularly, which is an important part of facial hydration and health. Urine color changes with moisture levels, but it can also change due to pigments in food or medications you take. Certain color changes may indicate a condition that requires medical attention.

Doctors call the standard color of your urine “urochrome”. Urine naturally carries a yellow pigment. When you stay hydrated, your urine will be light yellow, almost clear.

If you are dehydrated, you will notice that your urine turns deep amber or even light brown.

Urine colors can vary depending on what you eat, the medications you take, and how much water you drink. Most of these colors fall within the spectrum of what “normal” urine looks like, but there are times when unusual urine colors can be a cause for concern.

Although dehydration is a good thing, drinking too much water can deplete your body of electrolytes. Sometimes clear-looking urine is nothing to panic about, but consistently clear urine may indicate that you need to cut back on the amount of water you drink.

Clear urine can also indicate liver problems such as cirrhosis and viral hepatitis. If you are not drinking much water and have constant clear urine, you should see your doctor.

Holding In Your Urine For Long Is Hazardous To Health

“Typical” urine color falls on a spectrum from light yellow to a deeper amber color. The urochrome pigment that is naturally present in urine is further diluted when you drink water.

Urochrome is produced by your body by breaking down hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. In many situations, the color of urine depends on how diluted this pigment is.

Food. Urine may appear red or pink if you eat fruit with natural deep pink or magenta pigments, such as:

Medical conditions. While red or pink urine can be caused by something you’ve eaten recently, sometimes there are other reasons as well. Certain health conditions can cause blood in the urine, known as hematuria, including:

Drugs. Medicines that can make your urine red or pink include senna or laxatives containing senna, phenazopyridine (Piridium), and antibiotics.

Medical conditions. If orange urine is present in addition to light-colored stools, bile may enter the bloodstream due to problems with the bile ducts or liver. Jaundice in adults can also cause orange urine.

Drugs. Drugs that can make urine appear orange may include phenazopyridine (Pyridium), the anti-inflammatory sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), and chemotherapy drugs.

Food. Blue or green urine can be caused by food coloring, especially a dye called methylene blue. This paint contains many types of candy and some medicine.

Drugs. Drugs that can cause blue or green urine include cimetidine (Tagamet), amitriptyline, indomethacin (Indocin), promethazine (Phenergan), and B vitamin supplements.

Medical procedures. It can also be the result of dyes used in medical examinations of the kidneys or bladder.

Medical conditions. A Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infection can also cause urine to be blue, green, or even indigo purple.

A condition called benign familial hypercalcemia can also cause blue or green urine. With this condition, low or moderate levels of calcium can appear in the urine and change its color. Many people with this genetic condition have no symptoms to notice.

Peeing While Coughing: Is It Normal?

Drugs. Dark brown urine can also be a side effect of certain medications, including metronidazole (Flagyl) and nitrofurantoin (Furadantin), chloroquine (Aralen), cascara or senna-based laxatives, and methocarbamol.

Medical conditions. A condition called porphyria can cause natural chemicals to build up in the blood and cause urine to be rusty or brown. Dark brown urine can also be an indicator of liver disease, as it can be caused by bile entering the urine.

Exercises. Strenuous physical activity, especially running, can cause dark brown urine, known as hematuria. This is not considered unusual. When your urine becomes dark due to exercise, it will usually clear up within a few hours with some rest. If you often see dark brown urine after exertion, or if your urine does not return to normal after 48 hours, you should talk to your doctor about possible underlying causes.

Medical conditions. Cloudy urine can be a sign of a urinary tract infection. It can also be a symptom of chronic diseases and kidney diseases. In some cases, cloudy urine is another sign of dehydration.

What To Do If You Can’t Urinate After Surgery

If you have cloudy urine and you are pregnant, it may indicate a dangerous condition called preeclampsia. You should contact your healthcare provider immediately and tell them if you have cloudy or foamy urine during pregnancy.

Cloudy urine with foam or bubbles is called pneumaturia. This can be a symptom of serious health conditions, including Crohn’s disease or diverticulitis.

In most cases, abnormal urine colors are simply the result of dehydration, something you ate, or a side effect of medications you are taking. After noticing the unusual color, the urine should return to normal color in 2-3 days.

If your urine is cloudy, brown, blue, or green and does not return to a pale color, make an appointment to talk to your doctor.
