What Does It Mean When Your Vag Smells

What Does It Mean When Your Vag Smells – Have you noticed a horrible smell “out there” lately? I wonder if this is pregnancy related and is this normal or not?

During pregnancy, your body goes through some crazy changes, some of which are unpredictable. You know that your vagina needs to stretch to release the baby, but you didn’t know that there could be a new smell in there.

What Does It Mean When Your Vag Smells

In this article, we will discuss everything about vaginal odor during pregnancy, what causes it, when you should see a doctor, and how to get rid of it.

Vaginal Smells And What They Mean

Although it is unpleasant and uncomfortable, vaginal odor during pregnancy is actually normal. About 65 percent of women report experiencing vaginal odor during pregnancy. Bad breath can be one of the first signs of pregnancy.

If the smell started after pregnancy, it is probably related to pregnancy. Your smell can vary from mild to very strong and is usually nothing to worry about.

But remember that every pregnancy is different. You may experience a vaginal odor during pregnancy, and then there will be no odor the next time. In some trimesters, the smell may also be noticeable.

Physiological vaginal discharge during pregnancy is called leukorrhea. It is a thin, white discharge that feels wet. Although you may notice a slight change in smell, it’s not a bad smell, and it doesn’t itch or hurt. Leukorrhea is caused by an increase in pregnancy hormones and blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Normal Vs. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Although vaginal odor during pregnancy is usually completely normal due to hormones, increased blood volume, or nutrition, sometimes it is a sign of an infection or virus.

If you have a strong vaginal odor that lasts for a long time, or if it is accompanied by any of the following, it is best to consult your doctor:

Your doctor will test a sample of your vaginal fluid and cervical secretions to see if you have an infection.

I know you might be embarrassed by this new found smell, but don’t worry, you don’t have to. Midwives and subscribers have seen it all.

What Does A Healthy Vagina Smell Like?

If you have a yeast infection, your provider may prescribe or recommend an over-the-counter antifungal cream. If your vagina or vaginal discharge has a particularly “fishy” smell, you probably have bacterial vaginosis and will be prescribed a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection.

It’s important to see your doctor if you think you may have BV, as it has been linked to some pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, premature rupture of membranes, and uterine infection after delivery.

If all your tests are negative for yeast infections, bacterial infections, and STDs, your fluctuating hormones are responsible for the odor. It goes away after your baby is born.

Your vagina will clean itself. It is covered with various glands that lubricate and clean the area. There is no need to force any bath products or water into the vagina

If you wear panty liners, try to use all-cotton liners or at least unscented liners. Too much scent can irritate your skin and not help the scent at all.

Your new vaginal odor may be unpleasant and embarrassing, but remember, mom, you’re not alone. Bad breath is common during pregnancy and is usually caused by hormones. It may disappear after your baby is born.

However, odor is sometimes a sign of infection, so keep an eye out for any “fishy” odor, burning, irritation, or redness. Otherwise, practicing good hygiene, using cotton underwear and panties, avoiding douches and scented soaps, and changing your diet can help reduce the funk.

What A Healthy Vagina Should Smell Like

Trichomoniasis is an STI that can cause foul odor, painful urination, and lower abdominal discomfort. KATERYNA KOHN/FAN PHOTO LIBRARY/Getty Images

However, if you notice that your vagina has a bad, unpleasant odor, it’s a sign that something is wrong — especially if you’re also experiencing other symptoms, such as unusual discharge, along with the odor.

Bad-smelling stools can be caused by bacterial vaginosis, sweat or trichomoniasis. But there are other conditions that can cause odors that range from sour to foul.

Bacterial vaginosis is the main cause of fishy odor, Dr. Marilyn Jerome, OB-GYN at Foxhall OB-GYN Associates.

Vaginal Discharge Definition: A Guide

This is a condition where there are too many “bad” bacteria that destroy the healthy natural flora or bacteria in the gut.

How to treat: Treatment involves reducing the amount of harmful bacteria in the vagina with antibiotics. Jerome says your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to inject into your vagina, such as oral antibiotics such as clindamycin or metronidazole.

“Sometimes sweat mixing with vaginal flora can cause a fishy odor,” said Dr. Felice Gersh, OB-GYN and founder/director of Integrative Medical Group in Irvine.

Therefore, if you sweat a lot, especially if you stay in sweaty underwear and clothes for a long time, it can cause a fishy smell.

Here’s What Causes Vaginal Odor And How To Keep Your Vagina Clean

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite that can cause foul and foul-smelling foamy discharge, Gersh said.

While other sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia or gonorrhea can cause vaginal odor, Jerome says it’s less common because these STIs are more likely to be asymptomatic than trichomoniasis.

How to treat: Treatment is antibiotics. Your doctor will give you larger doses of antibiotics or several lower doses to make sure the infection is gone.

In addition, to prevent reinfection in the future, Gersh recommends using condoms to reduce the risk of trichomoniasis and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Vaginal Discharge: How To Tell If Yours Is Normal

If the smell of your vagina has an unpleasant smell, but it does not have to be a fishy smell – this may indicate other violations. Here are some things that can cause vaginal odor.

Gersh says that if you’re having unprotected sex and something comes out inside your vagina, the sperm creates an environment where your vaginal bacteria can produce a chlorine-like odor.

This is due to the chemical reaction between the vaginal microbes and the altered vaginal pH due to the sperm pH. The average pH of semen is 7.2 to 7.8, while the average pH of the vagina is more acidic, 3.8 to 5.0.

How to treat: the smell should go away by itself. How quickly it passes depends on the person. If the odor persists for more than a day, the sperm may be worsening an underlying condition such as bacterial vaginosis, which may require antibiotics.

Can Vaginal Discharge Help You Detect Early Pregnancy?

Regardless, if you’ve had unprotected sex with an unfamiliar partner, you may want to see your OB-GYN to check for a sexually transmitted infection.

If you accidentally leave something like a long-forgotten tampon, condom, or sex toy in your vagina, it can cause heavy, smelly discharge, says Jerome.

You may also have pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding. Foreign bodies are also breeding grounds for bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.

How to treat it: Removing the object from your vagina is enough to solve the problem and make you feel normal, says Jerome. Your OB-GYN can help you thoroughly remove any foreign objects and rule out any infections.

Why Your Vagina Smells Like Bleach Or Ammonia & What To Do About It

While it’s more likely that your vaginal odor is due to one of the above reasons, Jerome says that cancer is a rare but possible cause of vaginal odor, especially if you’ve had your OB for screenings over the years. -If you haven’t seen a GYN.

How to treat: If a cancer diagnosis is confirmed, treatment will depend on how advanced the cancer is. Common treatments are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Any persistent foul odor that is out of the ordinary, whether it smells fishy or strong, should be addressed as it could be a sign of an infection or a condition that requires medical attention.

It is important to see an OB-GYN to properly diagnose your condition and get the next treatment.
