Maybe you’re looking after a group of kids whose parents don’t have the healthiest relationship with food; perhaps raising their own children; or maybe you work with children every day. No matter the situation, you can take steps to model a balanced diet for these kids!

The first step is to make sure you are clear about what a “balanced diet” is. The principles of a balanced diet include respecting hunger and fullness, using moderation in foods that can cause stomach pain, eating a varied diet, and not following any restrictive diet (unless you have a medical condition like allergies, of course). If you can apply these principles to your diet, you can create a balanced diet for young children. Here are some concrete ways to incorporate the principles of a balanced diet into your life and your children’s lives!

Signs that you’re already an intuitive eater include rarely feeling extremely hungry or full, eating a varied diet, and eating all food groups in moderation (including carbs and sweets!). The essence of IE is to listen and respect your hunger and satiety cues. IE also includes eating when you might not be hungry or maybe full, like getting an ice cream cone at a carnival or going to another barbecue store.

We are all born with the ability to eat intuitively; just look at the little children in your life. A baby cries when it’s hungry and stops drinking when it’s full – a perfect model for intuitive eating. But as life goes on, there are many factors that can prevent a child from intuitively eating in this way.

For example, if a child is told to always make sure the plate is clean, they will no longer pay attention to their hunger and fullness cues and will only pay attention to making sure everything is on the plate. This can often mean that the child is already eating past the limit of comfortable satiety. But since he is rewarded for finishing all the food, he has no reason to ever wonder if his body really wants to clean that plate or not.

Similarly, a parent may give a child a cookie every time he starts crying without realizing it. Over time, this will teach the child that eating cookies is an effective way to calm down his negative emotions. Don’t get me wrong, we all need a comfort cookie every now and then. But teaching a child early on that negative emotions should be managed with food sets them up for emotional rather than intuitive eating.

To help your child eat more intuitively, model IE, let him eat when he’s hungry and stop when he’s full, and help him learn healthy ways to deal with negative emotions (such as talking about what he’s experiencing, journaling, or quiet time , itself). If you struggle with intuitive eating, or if your child is extremely fussy despite your modeling efforts, consider working with a dietitian to help get everyone on the right track!

It can be so hard to make food a neutral part of life, especially if you are a picky eater. Who wouldn’t want to cheer for their child when they finally nibble on that once-despised food?! However, these types of reactions to eating can cause inappropriate attention to eating and cause confusion in the child.

Your Guide To Non Diet Goal Setting

There are many reasons why a child may not eat a certain food (or certain foods), but these can often be overcome by neutralizing the food. What do I mean by food neutralization?

Instead of associating emotions with food and eating around the child, work to make the food as neutral as possible. You can rejoice when a child eats broccoli after months of refusal, but do so only in your mind. You can be angry if the child continues to refuse food, but again, just do it in your mind. Any attention you give to a child’s reaction to a food, whether your attention is positive or negative, can cause the child to overfocus on that food. If the bad food is, say, broccoli, and you’re visibly upset when the child refuses it, broccoli becomes “the disgusting food this person wants me to eat” instead of just broccoli.

Negative or positive reactions to food-related behaviors can reinforce behaviors you don’t want to continue. By keeping foods neutral, you open up a child’s natural potential to explore food on their own, which children love to do with most things!

While you are working to keep food neutral, you may also repeatedly expose your child to different foods. Repeated exposure to a food increases familiarity with the food and makes it more likely that the child will eventually eat the food, even if they have tried it and absolutely hated it before.

Let’s say the toddler in your life won’t eat chicken. You don’t need to give him chicken at every meal for effective food exposure; Place the chicken on a plate whenever you cook it. It can be once a week or even once a month. Make sure the child eats other foods alongside the food in question and watch what happens while remaining neutral.

If the child does not touch the chicken the first time, leave it there. Ask him if he’s finished or if he wants more food, then take it. Studies show that a child may need to be exposed to a food 10 to 30 times before they feel comfortable eating it. So be patient! It may take a long time for him to nibble on it, but
