Morning skin care routines focus on prevention and protection. Your face is exposed to the outdoors, so essential steps include moisturizer and sunscreen.

Focus on repairing damage done during the day with thicker products at night. This is also the time to use anything that makes the skin sensitive to the sun, including physical exfoliants and chemical peels.

If your skin is dry, focus your routine on moisturizing and building a healthy skin barrier. Follow the steps above, but replace products that may be too harsh or acidic with products that hydrate your skin and help it retain that moisture.

Oily Skin: Treatment And Prevention

A basic skin care routine has fewer steps than an extensive routine, but keeps your skin clear and healthy. The steps may depend on your needs and how much time you have. A basic routine usually includes removing makeup, cleansing the face, applying an anti-blemish cream, applying sunscreen during the day, and applying moisturizer.

It’s never too early – or too late – to start a skincare routine. Even children can practice skin care by washing their face when they wake up and before going to bed and using sunscreen during the day.

But choose specific steps and products in your routine based on your skin concerns and age. For example, teenagers may need a product-based routine to help manage blemishes and oily skin. Adults can focus more on products that support their skin as they age. Create a routine that works for you.

What Happened When I Tried My Mom’s Simple Skincare Routine

A good rule of thumb for many people is to use products from thinnest to thickest—as many products as possible—as they go through their skin care routine.

The most important thing is to find a skin care routine that works for you and that you stick to. Whether it’s the whole shebang or a simplified ritual, have fun experimenting.

Masks: Depending on my skin problem, I then apply a mask. Since I don’t do facials regularly, I try to do masks at night, 3 to 5 nights a week. If I feel like I’ve lost some glow and my skin is looking a little saggy, I love the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. Immediately after removing it, the skin feels more radiant and can I say – a little glowy? But in a good way and not reminiscent of my high school fat forehead. If I’m dealing with breakouts, I’ll use the Origins Clear Improvement Mask, which helps clear my skin while helping to suppress breakouts. When I notice that the wrinkles on my forehead are more pronounced, I will use the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask. It tightens my pores and rejuvenates the overall quality of my skin. Since this is my most common skin problem at age 35, this mask is the one I use the most, probably using 10 bottles over time. When my skin is dry, especially in the middle of the season or when I’m flying, I use the Darphin Hydrating Kiwi Mask. It smells amazing (like ripe, juicy fruit), and I love that you can take it off after a few minutes or leave it on overnight for some serious hydration. With all of these masks, I use a flat silicone brush to apply them. Not only does you lose a lot less product by using a brush instead of your fingers, but it makes the whole process more forgiving and spa-like, which is ideal since most masking times coincide with those times. I use the dropper to add a few drops to my fingers, which I then press onto my face, so just a little goes a long way. I add moisturizer for a few minutes. I just started using the Caudalie SOS Intensive Moisturizer and I love it. It absorbs instantly and leaves my skin feeling smooth and very hydrated. I always finish with an eye cream. It’s also great because I can still do the rest of my nightly routine after leaving it on for a few minutes.
