How To Care For A Sick Kitten
One of the pleasures of caring for cats is their nature. Cats are able to relax and live in a way that we can only imagine: playing, eating and sleeping. Unfortunately, these habits can be a disadvantage if the cat is sick. Instinctively, cats may try to hide, otherwise normal habits (sleep) are exaggerated. To decide if your cat is really sick, it helps to know the signs to look for.

To find out if your cat is sick, look for symptoms like frequent diarrhea and vomiting, which can be a sign of something wrong. Also listen to the cat’s breathing. If it breathes quickly and shallowly with the mouth open, it can hurt. You should also check your cat’s eyes and nose for excessive discharge, which could be a sign of an allergy or illness. These, along with changes in your cat’s sleep and eating habits, may mean it’s time to see a vet. For more information from our vet about how your cat is sick, including how to monitor diabetes and other illnesses, read on!No one knows your kitty better than you! What to do when you find a kitten 1. Determine if the kitten is in an area with known threats (trafficking dogs, etc.).
Do not touch the kittens, look around to determine if they are in an area with known threats such as traffic.
How To Tell If Your Cat Is Sick
2. If you know there is a threat, move the kitten to a safer place so the mother can still find it, but they are safe from the threat. (On the other side of the fence, under a nearby structure, etc.)
Healthy kittens have clean fur and big bellies. Sick kittens will be thin, dirty, and may have burning eyes or a runny nose. If the kitten looks healthy and there is no known threat to it, leave it there. I know it’s hard because we used to intervene, but think of it during this time as you would a bird’s nest. Mom might come right back, even if they are alone for a while.
4. If they look healthy and you leave them somewhere, check on the mother every few hours.
When you see Mom again, you can be sure that the kitten is okay to stay. Mother cats are unlikely to abandon their kittens.
Caring For Your Sick Cat
5. If the kitten looks sick or injured or the mother does not return within 24 hours, call your city emergency number or animal shelter.
The town or sanctuary will likely ask you if you are willing to raise and care for a kitten or help you determine
