What To Do When A Dog Is Choking

One of the most important things to do as a pet owner is to be prepared for anything that happens. Hopefully you will never experience your dog choking, but if you do, you need to know what to do.

How To Give A Choking Dog The Heimlich Maneuver

If the dog is choking, time is of the essence. You need to take action instead of waiting to see if the situation will resolve itself.

Although according to Modern Dog magazine, sometimes dogs can clear a blockage by coughing or sneezing, it’s not worth waiting if you can help it.

Of course, this is not a complete substitute for veterinary care, but if you wait to see a vet, your pet may die before you get to the vet’s office.

Act quickly to remove the blockages, then—as long as your dog can breathe—seek other veterinary care.

Why Is My Dog Gagging?

The first step is to (quickly!) determine if your dog is choking or if something else is going on.

If you’re a cautious dog owner, it’s easy to worry and assume the worst if you see your dog coughing or wheezing.

Enfield Pet Hospital says the biggest difference you can see between a choking dog and a person who’s just coughing is the way they’re breathing.

If a dog is choking, it can’t breathe in, but a coughing dog can stay calm.

Dog Honking And Reverse Sneezing: What You Need To Know

Additionally, PetMD states that the dog’s mouth or throat may be stuck in the mouth.

According to a veterinary associate, wheezing sounds unpleasant, like a sneeze being inhaled into the nose instead of being pushed out.

If you’re not sure if your dog is choking and you can’t breathe properly, it’s best to proceed as if it is, to avoid wasting time.

It is important to know what to do if your dog is choking. Keeping this information in your mind could mean the difference between life and death for your canine companion in the event of an injury.

Which Type Collar For Dogs Is Best?

The first thing you should do is use your finger to check for anything that might get stuck in your dog’s mouth or throat.

The Enfield Pet Hospital suggests taking your index finger and putting it in one side of the dog’s mouth, sliding it down the center of the throat and then to the other side.

If you feel the sensation of a smooth bone in your throat, this is a human apple, so don’t be surprised.

PetMD also recommends opening your dog’s mouth and checking the vision to see if you can find anything embedded.

My Dog Ate A Ball, Bone Or Toy

If it’s close enough that it’s easy to grab with your fingers, go ahead and try to pull it out by hand. If it’s too far or too hard to grab, try using long nose pliers or a flat spade handle.

Whatever you use or do – speak the truth and don’t shove it down your throat.

Be careful, because a choked dog is afraid and will bite more afraid. If you have a second person there, it’s best to hold the dog gently.

If you don’t see or hear a blockage, it must be down the vent pipe, so you should proceed to one of the following options.

Dog Choking? How To Perform The Heimlich Maneuver

This might not work for a dog the size of a Labrador, but if you happen to have a small dog that is choking, the next step is to pick it up and try to shake the object.

According to PetMD, picking up a small dog on your lap and gently rocking and shaking him can get rid of the problem.

If you have a large dog and the shaking doesn’t help, then go for the abdominal puncture, also known as the Heimlich maneuver. This is how a dog rescues a suffocated person.

For a video demonstration of the technique, on a small dog being carried and a large dog lying down, see the following video (

Is My Dog Choking? Having A Seizure? No, It’s Just A Reverse Sneeze!

If your dog has been sedated and is now unconscious, you should continue to follow the steps above as this will remove the barrier to regaining consciousness.

Of course this is a very serious situation, and it is not a substitute for veterinary treatment, it is only a preventive measure to get to the vet as soon as possible.

According to the University of Washington, the first step in performing CPR on your dog is to close his jaw and take two breaths through his nose. They need to lift their chest every now and then.

Your priority is to make sure your dog can breathe, so you need to do this before an emergency vet visit, because if you put your dog in the car, it may not be when he gets to the doctor. (Yes, if you live within 30 seconds of your vet’s office, go ahead and take your dog there ASAP.)

Coughing And Choking

However, once the blockage stops and your dog’s breathing is normal, that’s not the end of the matter.

This blockage can cause your dog’s throat or other injuries, which can also lead to a downward blockage.

Take your four-legged friend to the vet right away to be checked out and make sure everything is fine.

With luck, you’ll never be in a situation where your dog chokes, and you can reduce the risk to almost nothing by taking precautions.

Saving Puppy Lives: Canine Choking And Cpr

Treat your dog like a toddler who likes to put everything in his mouth. Make sure there is no lying down examination, especially if you are not there to examine your child.

Some of the most common crimes when dogs are neutered are items that were previously allowed to them, such as toys and chews.

Although many owners feed their dogs bark chews, these tend to soften and break into large pieces that easily go down the dog’s throat. So, it’s not a big deal.

If your dog is a heavy chewer, he may chew on larger pieces of rubber or plastic and get stuck in his windpipe.

What To Do If Your Dog Is Choking: First Aid, Heimlich Maneuver, & Cpr

We recommend buying the toughest, unbreakable dog toys you can find and always supervise your dog while playing with soft toys, in case something goes wrong.

Dogs are natural chewers, so it’s hard to keep them from a choking hazard, no matter how hard you try.

What To Do If Your Dog Starts Choking

Two weeks ago, Humphrey had asthma. At first we knew he choked after he started biting, then he ran away from people (a sign of fear).

My husband and I followed him outside and I noticed that the inside of his mouth was pale and his tongue was gray. Seconds later, he threw up and passed out.

Afterwards, we realized that he was more relaxed and calm, even though the whole experience was a bit jarring. He came back very quickly, so we didn’t take him to the ER (although my advice is to go with your instincts – you’ll know if your child is still in pain) but we went to see you let’s go to the doctor tomorrow.

My main takeaways from this experience are a) you really have to treat your dog like small children, as they can put anything in their mouth out of curiosity. b) Learn how to do the Heimlich for your dog!
