When Do You Need Medication For Anxiety – Each anxiety disorder has different symptoms, but Ken Duckworth, MD, chief medical officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, says many people with these disorders can benefit. three-pronged approach: psychotherapy, exercise and medication.
Each person may need a different combination of these three elements, and in different orders. “There is no magic in treating anxiety,” says Dr Duckworth.
When Do You Need Medication For Anxiety
“Some people will do better with psychotherapy alone, while others may need medication to help them focus better on therapy. Anxiety and depression can reduce motivation to exercise, but medication can give you the energy to do it.” Also, says Duckworth, a patient may need more than one medication.
Anxiety Disorders And Anxiety Attacks
Within each of these categories, there are subgroups of drugs that work differently and have their own benefits, risks, and possible side effects.
In particular, SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant. They make serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps maintain mood, more available to the brain.
“They are very effective for treating anxiety disorders,” says Beth Salcedo, MD, medical director of the Ross Center for Anxiety & Related Disorders and former chair of the board of directors of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. It’s unclear exactly how SSRIs work on serotonin to relieve anxiety, says Dr. Salcedo, but what is known is that they are not addictive like benzodiazepines (although they can cause uncomfortable symptoms if people stop too suddenly).
It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions when taking any prescription medication. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about side effects of medication or if the medication you are taking does not relieve your symptoms.

Benzodiazepines help relieve anxiety by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter in the brain and causing a calming effect. They are fast acting and can relieve anxiety for several hours.
Because they work so quickly and because people who take them can develop a tolerance that requires them to need higher doses to feel better, doctors prescribe them for very short periods of time—usually no longer than a month.

Some people with phobias or panic disorder may be prescribed a heart medication called a beta blocker. This medication is mainly prescribed for irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure, but it has been shown to be useful in treating the feelings that accompany high blood pressure situations.
“Beta-blockers can be very helpful, but in a limited way,” says Dr. Salcedo. “They’re mostly used for performance anxiety. They’re really good for physical symptoms like rapid heart rate, sweating, shaking, but they work less well for anxious thoughts that can cause the symptoms.
