To assess Mrs. Smith’s symptoms, we must first consider her specific circumstances (known as “precipitations”). Have you recently lost a family member, friend or pet? Are you currently experiencing escalating economic hardship, a house move, marriage or divorce, or a major change in life circumstances?

Then we must remember this diagram that I usually sketch out for my patients in the air. Notice that the left circle represents symptoms of depressive disorders and the right circle represents symptoms of anxiety disorders.
However, if the circles are conceptualized as a Venn diagram, there is a large overlapping area that contains symptoms common to both depressive and anxiety disorders!
Bottom line: you may be just as concerned about depression or an anxiety disorder. It is sadness, suicidal thoughts, anhedonia (loss of interest or pleasure in things), low self-esteem, fatigue, and changes in sleep or appetite that identify your illness as depression. Similarly, sweating, palpitations, a sense of impending doom (“I’m either going to die or go crazy if I don’t get out of here”), tremors, and feeling helpless identify your illness as an anxiety disorder. Anxiety, problems with thinking and/or concentrating, worrying, somatic (body) complaints and agitation are symptoms common to both depression and anxiety disorders.
And to make things even more complicated, you can have both depression and an anxiety disorder, which thankfully can be treated with the same antidepressant!
